Perez: Modric represents the values of Real Madrid
Florentino Perez gave a speech about Real Madrid's values, seemingly in response to Cristiano Ronaldo's comments about humility at the club.
As per tradition, Florentino Perez gave a speech at the Real Madrid Christmas press lunch this Tuesday. And this year’s speech focused on the importance of club values, amongst which he highlighted humility and respect.
His speech came a day after La Gazzetto dello Sport published an interview with Cristiano Ronaldo, in which the ex-Madrid star claimed that Juventus were a more “humble” club than Madrid.
Perez started by thanking the press members in attendance for their work in covering the club and its values, before adding: “You are direct witnesses of one of the best stages in Real Madrid’s history. For the first time we are European champions of football and basketball, which is a global milestone.
“Madrid has won three consecutive Champions League titles – four in five years – and that is the result of enormous work based around the values of the club: respect, humility, solidarity. This era of success is thanks to the unity of Madrid, a unity that allows us to have stability.”
The Madrid president went onto to cite Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric as one of the players who embody the values of the club. “These players now form part of the history and legend of Madrid – among them Luka Modric, winner of the Ballon d’Or and The Best (Fifa award), who represents the talent and values of Madrid.”
Perez concluded his speech by mentioning the Copa Libertadores final between River Plate and Boca Juniors that took place at the Bernabéu last Sunday.
"We are at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium,” he said, “which on Sunday was an example of the values of sport, where the passion for sport coexisted with the values of the sport.”
