Benfica president Luís Filipe Vieira has said that the Portuguese club have not given up the ghost in their pursuit of José Mourinho and that “money is not an issue” in their bid to contract the former Manchester United manager to replace Rui Vitória, who was sacked last Friday with the side behind Braga and Mourinho’s former club Porto in the standings.

Who would not like to have Mourinho? If he says yes tomorrow, he’ll be here at the drop of a hat,” Vieira told Portuguese broadcaster SIC.

Asked if Mourinho’s financial demands were beyond the club’s capabilities, Vieira said Benfica would have no problem meeting the 55-year-old’s demands, although he also admitted he had yet to speak personally with Mourinho.

Vieira added that the identity of Benfica’s new coach would not be known “until next week” with reserve team coach Bruno Laje in temporary charge of the senior side.

Vitória was dismissed after a run of bad results despite delivering two league titles, a Taça de Portugal, a league cup and two Portuguese Super Cups during his three-and-a-half year tenure at the Estádio da Luz.
