With a dearth of goals and raft of injuries up front – the latest being Karim Benzema – Real Madrid are looking to reinforce their attacking line in the winter transfer window and have already contacted Krzysztof Piatek, sources close to the player have confirmed to AS.

These sources claimed that conversations have taken place between Real Madrid and the Genoa striker’s representatives and that the Bernabéu "is following him" closely.

These same sources also stated that they have been talking with “many great clubs” that are interested in the 23-year-old, but confirmed that Barcelona was not amongst those clubs, and that, as of yet, no formal offer has been made by any clubs.

Aside from Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Borussia of Dortmund are also intent on trying to sign Piatek before the winter market close, according to reports by Spanish radio programme SER Deportivos.

Genoa sources also confirm Madrid contact with Piatek

AS has also spoken with sources close to those in charge at Genoa, who also confirmed that there has been contact with Real Madrid and the player, and recognised the “concrete interest” of the LaLiga giants. However no formal offer has been made to the club for the player, according to these same sources.

Genoa intended to hold onto Piatek until at least the summer, but if the right offer comes in before January 31, they could change their plans. The Serie A club have set a price tag of over 50 million for the Polish striker – a figure they deem appropriate for a player who scored 19 goals in his first 20 games in Italy, and is currently Serie A’s second highest goal scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo with 13 goals.
