Official: Barça sign Kevin-Prince Boateng on loan from Sassuolo

Kevin Prince-Boateng is now officially a Barcelona player. Shortly after 21:30 hours this evening, the Catalan club announced the loan arrangement agreed with Sassuolo until 30 June, but didn't disclose the fee they have agreed with the Italian club in the deal. Barça did confirm however that they have secured an option to buy the 31-year-old for 8 million euros when the loan expires this summer.

Boateng arrived in Barcelona this evening and was already seen wearing the azulgrana badge. He is due to sign his contract tomorrow at 11:30 hours, a photocall outside Camp Nou will follow at 12.15 hours before his official presentation at 13:00 hours. Just before he caught a flight to Spain, Boateng spoke to reporters about his future: “It's been sad saying goodbye to Sassuolo but now I'm focused on Barça. Please don't ask me about Real Madrid, I hope I can score in the Clásico…”.

Boateng must also pass a medical revision with Barça before he can complete his move although the club expects that to be a formality. The forward probably will not be included in the squad for Thursday's Copa del Rey quarter final first leg against Sevilla but Valverde requested a player who knows the Spanish league and who will be able to play for the team with immediate effect.

Boateng to replace Munir as back-up to Luis Suárez

Boateng, who has played in LaLiga before at Las Palmas, where he scored 10 goals in 29 games in 2016-17 under Quique Setién, will serve as back-up to Luis Suárez at Barcelona after the acrimonious departure of Munir El Haddadi, who joined Sevilla earlier this month.

Barça had sounded out Álvaro Morata, Christan Stuani and Carlos Vela among others before settling on Boateng, who has scored five times for Sassuolo this season in 15 appearances across all competitions.
