Barcelona sign Frenkie de Jong
The Dutch defensive midfielder has moved to the Catalan side from Ajax signing for five seasons for a fee of 86 million euro (75 fixed plus 11 in variables).
Frenkie de Jong has finally ended the mystery over his next destination with the Dutch player moving to Barcelona on a five year deal. The now, former Ajax put pen to paper on his Barça deal in the company of club president Josep María Bartomeu and CEO Òscar Grau this evening in Amsterdam. De Jong will remain with Ajax through to the end of the current campaign and move to the Catalan capital on July 1st.
The 21-year-old De Jong moves for a fee of 86 million euro (75 fixed plus an additional 11 million euro in variables) and will remain with the Catalan club through to June 30, 2024. Barcelona faced stiff competition in securing the services of the young player with PSG offering stiff competition in the battle to sign De Jong.
'Made in Barça'
Frenkie de Jong is one of the most promising central players currently in action in Europe and moved to Ajax from the youth set-up at Willem II.
De Jong moved to the Amsterdam club in 2015 and immediately went back on loan to his former club. After one season with the Tilburg outfit, De Jong returned to play for Jong Ajax (Ajax ´B´) in the Dutch second division and a season later made the step up to the Eredivise with the first team Ajax. The Arkel born player was also involved in the 2017 Europa League as the Dutch side fell to Manchester United in Solna.
De Jong is a versatile central player with excellent vision and joins a long list of Dutch talent, from Johan Cruyff in 1973 through to Koeman, Kluivert, Frank de Boer and goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen who have made the move to Camp Nou and pulled on the famous claret and navy stripes.
