Cristiano and Juventus' near misses with the elusive treble
During the last four seasons, when Juve have won the Scudetto-Coppa double, only winning the Champions League has impeded completing the treble.
Cristiano Ronaldo has missed out on a League-Cup-Champions League treble once again. It's one of the few feats that the 33-year-old hasn't managed either at his previous club Real Madrid or Manchester United - despite coming close on several occasions. It's his dream to win the treble with Juve, but after last night's elimination from the Coppa Italia to Atalanta, he'll have to wait another season for his next opportunity.
Juve, Italy's League and Cup kings of recent years
Only seven European clubs have won the treble, and Juve are not among them, despite being on track to become the eighth club to manage the achievement during all of the last four seasons. The last time Juventus didn't go all the way to the final and lift the Coppa (they've won the last four) was in 2014 when Roma knocked them out at the quarter finals stage. That was a bit of a depressing year for the Turin-based outfit who, despite winning the Scudetto (they've won the last seven and are on course to lift No.8), were dumped out of the Champions League at the group stage and denied a place in the Europa League final by Benfica.
In the past four seasons, it's been the Champions League where Juve have stumbled. They've won a Scudetto-Coppa double every year since 2015, but been less successful in Europe - losing twofinals (2015 to Barça and 2017 to Real Madrid); last season Madrid knocked them out in the quarter finals and Bayern eliminated them in 2016.
CR7's treble chances
Cristiano meanwhile, hasn't seen his chances of winning the treble end so soon since Madrid were booted out of the Copa del Rey for illegally fielding Denis Cheryshev in December 2015. A year earlier Atlético de Madrid advanced at Madrid's expense in the Last 16 and the year before that, Madrid won the Copa del Rey and Champions League but were pipped to LaLiga by Atlético.
