Optimism was riding high among Real Madrid fans at the end of the month of January and beginning of February as striker Karim Benzema was prolific in front of the target netting six goals in four matches (Espanyol and Alavés in LaLiga and against Girona in the two legged Copa del Rey tie). The player was modest when being asked about this run at the time stating: "The modern forward is more than just a goal machine, one has to get involved in the build-up, open space and provide assists".

This six goal spell brought the French strikers season tally to 18 and hopes were high that the Lyon born player had recovered his goal scoring mojo. Things have not transpired that way with the last seven matches producing a dip in from for the striker in front of the target with a goal from the spot against Levante in the league and an accomplished finish in the Amsterdam Arena in the Champions League win against Ajax the players only return in this time.

Even more alarming for the Bernabeu faithful is that these seven games have only see the striker create ten shots with just six on target and his overall goal per minute ratio of one strike per 167 minutes of action pales in comparison with that of Cristiano Ronaldo in the white shirt with the Portuguese forward hitting 450 goals in 37,833 minutes (a goal in every 84' of playing action).
