REAL MADRID - CELTA

AS resident ref: Modric goal shouldn't have been disallowed

Our referee Eduardo Iturralde González considers the referee in the Real Madrid v Celta match made the wrong call on what would have been Madrid's opening goal.

AS resident ref: Modric goal shouldn't have been disallowed

Having reviewed Modric's goal in the 55th minute of the Real Madrid - Celta Vigo game at the Bernabéu, referee Martínez Munuera disallowed the strike for an offside from Varane.

No interference by Varane on Modric goal

However our resident referee, Eduardo Iturralde González, considers that the match official made the wrong call by chalking the goal off. His explanation: "If you watch the ball from the moment it's kicked until it goes in the goal, there's no offside. You can only be distracted if the player [Varane] moves towards the ball". Varane in fact moved away from the ball and was never in between the ball and the keeper.

Mistake by the referee in Real Madrid v Celta Vigo

Iturralde's conclusion: "It's a mistake by the referee and the VAR because there is no interference. To blow for offside there has to be interference in the play or with an opposition player and Varane moves away. To be offside there needs to be interference. It should be a goal because the goalkeeper can see the ball and there's no interference because Varane moves away, he got out of there".
