Johnson: NYCFC keeper guilty of MLS gaffe of the season

The first ever game at Allianz Field brought plenty of goals and also an unforgivable error by New York City goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Minnesota United played their first game at new stadium Allianz Field when they faced New York City FC, with Osvaldo Alonso netting the first goal in the history of Minnesota's new home. However, what will be most memorable about the maiden match at this stadium is what happened to New York City goalkeeper Sean Johnson.

Johnson made probably the mistake of the year in MLS when his defence delayed clearing under pressure by the Loons, and instead of controlling the ball, the custodian tried to trap it with his foot, brushed it and sent it toward his net, scoring the worst own goal of the season.

The incident put the hosts 3-2 up after just half an hour of a high-scoring first 45, although fortunately for the New York goalie his team equalised after the break to earn a 3-3 draw.

Chart table

The result leaves Minnesota fifth in the Western Conference, while New York City FC jumped to ninth place with the five points they earned with the draw.
