Guillermo Ochoa’s playing career is officially over.

After weeks of speculation, the legendary Mexican goalkeeper announced his retirement at age 41, bringing the curtain down on one of the most remarkable careers in soccer history. His farewell came after a World Cup that allowed him to say goodbye where it all began: the iconic Estadio Azteca, surrounded by thousands of fans chanting his name in the stadium he will always call home.

“I gave everything. I left everything on the field for my clubs and for my national team,” Ochoa said in an emotional video posted on social media, officially announcing the end of a career that earned him a place alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the only three players ever called up to six FIFA World Cups.

An emotional farewell to Mexico

“When a club gave me its crest, it also entrusted me with its history. But there was one jersey that carried a different weight, one that represented an entire nation,” Ochoa said.

“Every time I wore the Mexico jersey, I carried the dreams of millions of Mexicans. The dreams of those who couldn’t be in the stadium but lived every match from home with their families. The dreams of those who lost their voices singing ‘Cielito Lindo.’ The dreams of those who prayed in silence before every penalty.”

Ochoa then turned his attention to the next generation of goalkeepers.

“The time has come to take off these gloves and, for the first time, leave them in someone else’s hands. To whoever comes next, I only want to say one thing: Believe.”

He ended his farewell message by thanking everyone who helped shape his journey.

“I never imagined how far one dream could take me. Today I look back with pride and simply say thank you. Thank you to my family. Thank you to my teammates. Thank you to every fan who supported me every step of the way. I leave with the love of millions and the peace of knowing I gave everything for Mexico. No one can take away what we lived together. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything.”

A career that changed Mexican soccer

Ochoa’s name is forever etched into the history of Mexican soccer and the global game. Every four years, even fans with no connection to Mexico looked forward to watching him perform on the sport’s biggest stage. The World Cup became his showcase, where his unforgettable performances earned admiration from fans around the world.

His journey began with Club América, where he quickly became one of Mexico’s brightest stars before leaving the comfort of home to pursue a career in Europe. He became the first Mexican goalkeeper to establish himself on the continent, playing for Ajaccio in France before stops with Málaga and Granada in Spain, Standard Liège in Belgium, Salernitana in Italy, AVS in Portugal, and Apollon Limassol in Cyprus.

When Club América needed him most, Ochoa returned to his boyhood club, although one final league title ultimately eluded him before he headed back to Europe for the final chapters of his career.

More than two decades after making his professional debut, Ochoa walks away as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Mexican soccer history and one of the defining faces of recent World Cups.
