Hannover 96 say American Chris Gloster racially abused
A fresh case of racism has come to light in German football, this time against the 18-year-old US defender, who allegedly received insults in a Hannover 96 'B'-team game.
Bundesliga team Hannover 96 are at the centre of a fresh case of racism in German football after fans of VfB Lübeck allegedly abused 18-year old American defender Chris Gloster, who currently plays for the club's 'B' team.
According to the German team's statement, during the fourth division match, the right-back received racist insults throughout the game, related to the colour of his skin, many of the fans even calling him a "monkey" on several occasions.
"Chris was sitting in the dressing room crying at the end of the match, he was massively insulted throughout the game, so we decided to report the case to the federation, as this crossed limits," said Michael Tarnat, director of Hannover 96's youth teams.
Team-mates' support
After the racist attacks, Gloster's team-mates embraced and encouraged the US under-20 international, expressing their support to the defender on social media. "Keep fighting brother, don't listen to the haters, say no to racism," wrote Leo AWinkauf, Hannover's goalkeeper.
Marvin Zimmermann and Tim Dierßen also sent support messages: "We support you, let them talk brother," and "Always with your head held high." Captain Niklas Tarnat wrote, "Let them talk; you are bigger and stronger than that."
