MLS announces soon they will reach the thirty franchises
The body detailed through a statement that there is an intention to increase the number of teams in the league; there are already talks with possible candidates.
The MLS is planning for the future, and this future involves the expansion of the league from 24 teams to 30 franchises in the coming years.
In a statement, Major League Soccer explained that no formal decision has yet been take on the intended expansion, developed in consultation with the owners through meetings held in Los Angeles, but that the Commissioner's office has authorised the start of conversations with Sacramento and St. Louis, potential candidates for new MLS franchises.
Ownership groups wishing to enter the fight for an MLS franchise must formally submit their projects to the Major League Soccer Expansion Committee; bidding topics, corporate commitments, strategies, and player development should be addressed in them.
New additions
Inter Miami CF and Nashville SC will join the MLS as new franchises by 2020, while Austin FC will join in 2021, and with it, the number of franchises will reach 27.
The expansion fee for franchises 28 and 29 will be 200 million dollars, while the cost for the 30th franchise will be determined in the future. The situation of clubs 28 and 29 will be solved within the next few months, and everything indicates that the expansion is almost a fact.
