Former Real Madrid manager Vanderlei Luxemburgo, who was instrumental in Neymar’s development when the PSG star was coming through the ranks at Santos in 2009, has suggested the Brazil captain is afforded “too much protection” and that his coaches and the media treat him differently to other players.

“He needs to have a talk with his coach. As in football as in life, it needs to be a frank and honest one. Neymar is over-protected. Not just by coaches, but also by television coverage and by the media, who treat him differently to other players. It is being forgotten that he is a football player,” Luxemburgo said in an interview with Radio Jornal.

The PSG star is not enjoying the smoothest of seasons in Paris. An injury ruled him out of the Champions League tie against Manchester United, in which PSG surrendered a two-goal lead in the return leg at the Parc des Princes, and although he was back for and scored in the Coupe de France final against Rennes, his side lost the game and Neymar is facing a France Football Federation investigation for an altercation with a fan after the game.

Neymar has also been handed a three match ban by UEFA for comments he made about the match officials in the wake of the defeat to Manchester United.
