Salah, Mané, Aubameyang share Premier League Golden Boot

As the 20 Premier League teams took to the field for the respective matches on the final day of the 2018/19 season, most of the focus was on which of Manchester City and Liverpool would win the title. There was, however, also the small matter of the Golden Boot winner at stake and it was just like this incredible campaign to keep it tight until the very end.

Golden: Salah, Mané and Aubameyang

Going into the afternoon fixtures in England (all kicking off simultaneously as is tradition on the final day) Liverpool's Mohamed Salah led the way on 22 goals. Behind him came Manchester City's Sergio Agüero, Salah's teammate Sadio Mané and Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang all on 20. These were the only real players in contention for the top scorer award - one that Salah had claimed last season with 32 goals - and would all score.

As Sunday's games developed, it was Mané who struck first, taking just 16 minutes against Wolves at Anfield. He would go on to score again ten minutes from time, taking his total to 22. Arsenal's frontman didn't get on the scoresheet until the second half, but was quick to follow that up. That brace, on minutes 50 and 61 made it a three way tie at the top of the goalscoring charts.

Agüero for his part was instrumental in getting Man City immediately back in the game at Brighton, as Pep Guardiola's side went on to a comfortable 1-4 victory that confirmed them as league champions for a sixth time. The Argentine did not score again, however, and ended his tally on 21.

So, for the first time, three African players shared the Golden Boot award, and it's worth noting that they also provided eight (Salah, Egypt), five (Aubameyang, Gabon) and one (Mané, Senegal) assists for their team.

There was more trophy success for Liverpool with their goalkeeper winning the Premier League Golden Glove award for the most clean sheets. Brighton's goal against Man City's Ederson moved Alisson ahead of him by one, on 21.
