Madrid, the venue for the 173rd meeting between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham and Liverpool will contest the fourth European final to be played between English clubs. A few interesting facts about the two teams.

Clubs. This year's finalists, Tottenham and Liverpool have not won the English league in a combined 87 years - it's been 29 years since Liverpool were last crowned champions (89-90) and for Tottenham, it's been even longer - 58 years (60-61).

Final between clubs from the same country. Tonight's game will be the 20th European final between clubs from the same country: there's been seven such encounters in the European Cup/Champions League (three from Spain, two fron England, one from Italy and one from Germany), 10 in the UEFA Cup/ Europa League (Italy - 4, Spain - 2, England - 2, Germany - 1 and Port6ugal - 1 Portugal) and three in the Ferias Cup (all between Spanish clubs).

Finals between English clubs. This will be the fourth European final between English clubs: Tottenham v Wolverhampton (UEFA Cup final 1971-72); Chelsea v Manchester United (Champions League final 2007-08) and Arsenal v Chelsea (Europa League final 2018-19).

Finalist No.40. Tottenham will become the 40th club to have played in a European Cup/Champions League final. Out of the 39 other finalists, 15 won the trophy at the first attempt - but only one have do so in the Champions League era: Real Madrid (1956), Benfica (1961), Inter Milan (1964), Celtic (1967), Manchester United (1968), Feyenoord (1970), Bayern Munich (1974), Liverpool (1977), Nottingham Forest (1979), Aston Villa (1982), Steaua Bucharest (1986), Porto (1987), PSV Eindhoven (1988), Red Star Belgrade (1991) and Borussia Dortmund (1997).

Liverpool and Tottenham: Head to head. The two clubs have met 172 times in official competition (152 in the league, seven in the FA Cup, eight in the League Cup, once in the Charity Shield and twice in the UEFA Cup), with 82 victories for Liverpool, 48 victories for Tottenham and 42 draws; 271 goals for the Reds and 195 goals for Spurs. Tonight's final will be the third time they have met on neutral ground - they faced each other in the League Cup final  in 1982 (Liverpool won 3-1 at Wembley) and the Charity Shiled the same year (Liverpool won 1-0).

Three friendly meetings. Spurs and Liverpool have met three times - twice during the Royal Swazi Sun Challenge in June 1984 and more recently, at the M&T Bank Stadium, Baltimore Maryland, USA in July 2012.

Previous meeting in Europe. They've only met once in European competition in the 1972-3 UEFA Cup semni-final. Liverpool advanced to the final after winning the home leg 1-0 at Anfield Alec Lindsay scoring the only goal of the game. Tottenham won the return leg 2-1 (Martin Peters grabbing a brace) - Steve Heighway's strike just after half-time saw the Reds go through on the away goals rule.

Negative stat. Tottenham have only won one of their last 14 encounters with Liverpool in official competition (winning 4-1 at Wembley in the 2017/18 Premier League). In the remaining 13 games, Liverpool won nine (including both the league meetings last season) while four have ended level.

Historical top scorers. Two big names top the all-time goals ranking in meetings between Tottenham and Liverpool - Jimmy Greaves with 11 and Ian Rush with 13.
