Tottenham - Liverpool: team news, confirmed line-ups
AS brings you the the latest team news as Tottenham and Liverpool prepare to square off in the 2019 Champions League final in Madrid.
Two English clubs square off in the final of the Champions League for the first time since 2008, as Tottenham prepare to take on Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on Saturday evening.
And were it not for two of the most remarkable comebacks in the history of European football, neither side’s fans would be basking in the Madrid sunshine this weekend.
First came Liverpool, who, without Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino, pulled off a stunning 4-0 victory against Barcelona at Anfield in the second leg of the semi-final to overturn Messi and Co’s 3-0 advantage from Camp Nou.
Twenty four hours later, Spurs managed even bigger heroics, scoring the three away goals they needed in the second half in Amsterdam against Ajax to book the club's place in its first-ever Champions League final.
Lucas Moura was the hat-trick hero on the night, scoring his last goal in the 96th minute to send half of North London through their living room ceilings. But with Harry Kane now fit and available to Mauricio Pochettino after an almost seven-week injury lay-off, the Argentine has chosen to leave Moura on the bench.
Jürgen Klopp had somewhat easier decisions to make than his counterpart, with Firmino and Salah slotting back into the starting line-up after missing the Barcelona clash at Anfield.
Klopp’s players will be determined to bring an end to their coach’s six-match winless run in finals and are slight favourites going into Saturday night’s mouth-watering clash at the Wanda. But if we have learned anything from the knockout phases of this year’s competition (arguably the most exciting in living memory), a ‘favourites’ tag is perhaps more of a curse than a blessing.
