Real Madrid rekindle interest in Mo Salah

The Egyptian striker refused to discuss plans related to his future in a flash interview with Movistar + after Saturday's UCL final win in Madrid.

Mohamed Salah refused to discuss his future in a flash interview with Movistar Liga de Campeones shortly after the final whistle as Liverpool claimed their sixth European Cup win in Madrid on Saturday. The 26-year-old striker claimed: "I don't want to discuss my future now" and avoided any follow up questions by reporter Isabel Forner.

Despite the Egyptian's comments not having the same fortitude as that of Cristiano or Gareth Bale after the 2018 final in Kiev, they have helped reawaken interest in the player at Real Madrid.

Following Cristiano's 2018 exit to Juventus, Salah was one of the strikers on a Madrid short -list to replace the Portuguese forward but following an initial line of enquiry, the 200 million price tag for the Egyptian's signature was a sufficient deterrent for Madrid to look elsewhere. Now, following one of the most abject seasons suffered by the Bernabéu outfit, the need is greater for Zidane to compile a squad that can compete in all competitions. Salah's sometimes complicated relationship with Liverpool head coach Jürgen Klopp offers hope to the Chamartín club that securing the services of the African striker may not beyond the realms of possibility.

2023 contract

Salah currently earns a salary of 11 million euros per season and his current Anfield deal expires in 2023. According to online transfer portal Transfermarkt, Salah carries a price-tag of 150 million euros (similar to that of Kane, Hazard, De Bruyne and Griezmann) with only Messi (160M), Neymar (180M) and Mbappé (200M) requiring bigger financial outlays.

Whilst it would come as a major surprise if Salah were to consider abandoning Anfield after a Champions League win and impressive domestic campaign where the Reds were pipped to the Premier League title by just one point by Manchester City with the striker bagging 22 goals, his comments have revived interest among those clubs who have been monitoring Salah in the past, principally, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

Salah has also in the past claimed that his footballing idols are Ronaldo Nazario, Totti and Zinedine Zidane with the French coach also a confessed admirer of the 26-year-old stating: "Salah is a great player, he showed that in his time with Roma and is doping so at Liverpool. He's a player whom I admire greatly".
