Mexico smacks Canada for Group A top spot
The game between Mexico and Canada was more than just the second matchday of the Gold Cup, for both teams was the fight for the first place of Group A.
Canada started the game in a very defensive way holding Mexico's pressure for most of the first half while trying to surprise El Tri through a long shot or a counter attack, but Gerardo Martino's side didn't stop seeking to open the lines in a chance to score.
Roberto Alvarado was in charge of scoring the first goal for Mexico at the 40th minute, a goal that paid off the constant arrival of El Tri in Canada's side, as El Tri was the squad who created more opportunities to score. Raúl Jiménez in collective action with LA Galaxy winger Uriel Antuna created a great chance on goal just before the whistle sound marking the end of the first half, an attempt stop in an excellent way by Borjan.
For the second part, the game started pretty much the same, with Mexico pressuring hard up front, but this time, the Reds were open as they sought to find their way into Mexico's inside area, in an attempt to score. But El Tri was the one to find the back of the net, with Guardado scoring the second goal of the night.
Andrés Guardado had a great night as he became the top Mexican scorer in the history of the Gold Cup, and thanks to Uriel Antuna who created an incredible play to assist him, the captain scored a double in the 3-1 victory over Canada. The Maple Leaf squad goal was in charge of Lucas Cavallini.
