History could be about to repeat itself for Dani Ceballos. In 2017, the midfielder was signed by Real Madrid from Betis after a stand-out performance at the European under-21 Championship in Poland where he was named player of the tournament as Spain finished runners-up.

Two years later Ceballos is again starring for La Rojita at the under-21 Euros in Italy, where Spain have qualified for the semi-finals after beating Poland 5-0 in the final group game, his contribution to the cause this summer also catching the eye of AC Milan.

The Rossoneri are very keen on taking Ceballos to the San Siro and La Gazzetta reports that sporting director Paolo Maldini is working on a plan. Real value Ceballos at 45-50 million euros, which is a little rich for Milan’s taste, so the former Italy great is hoping that he can use the good relationship between the two clubs to hammer out a two-year loan deal with a purchase option and with Milan picking up the player’s entire salary.

What with Zinedine Zidane having made it very clear that he isn’t interested in retaining Ceballos, Maldini’s ploy should bear fruit. He was in Madrid last week to meet with Florentino Pérez and Real general director José Ángel Sánchez where Ceballos was the main course but inquiries were also made about the availability of Borja Mayoral, another player in the spotlight at the under-21 Euros, and Martin Odegaard, who Zidane would also like to shift from his amply stocked wings.
