Martin Odegaard is set for a two-season loan spell at Real Sociedad, after Real Madrid decided to renew the Norwegian’s contract until 2023.

The young midfielder spent last season on loan with Vitesse in Holland, and is now set to return to Spain to continue gaining valuable top-flight experience at Sociedad.

Odeegard has returned to Madrid to sign a two-season extension to his current deal at the Bernabéu and will then head north to begin the pre-season with the Basque-based club (who had another Madrid loanee, Theo Hernandez, on the books last season) once a deal is put in place.

Odeegard choses Sociedad over Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen were also in the running to sign the 20-year-old defender and were the preferred option of Madrid. However, following the advice of his agent and after visiting Sociedad’s facilities, Odeegard chose the LaLiga club over a move to Germany and Madrid will respect his decision.

Several details need to be ironed out between the two clubs regarding Odeegard’s loan agreement, one of them being whether the player will be excluded from playing for Sociedad against Real Madrid in LaLiga and cup competitions during his stay at the Anoeta Stadium.

This will be the young Norweigan’s third loan spell away from the Madrid since joining Real Madrid Castilla in 2015, after Vitesse and Heerenveen.

Odeegard has been given the opportunity to renew his contract at the Bernabéu after an impressive season in Eredivisie with Vitesse in last season, during which he played 39 games, providing 11 goals and 12 assists.
