Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic has been chosen as Bayern Munich’s alternative signing to Leroy Sané after the Manchester City player suffered a knee injury that will see him side-lined for up seven months.

According to Germany’s Sport Bild, the Croatian has already passed a medical in Munich and is set to sign a contract with the German champions, which will make him available for their Bundesliga opening fixture against Hertha on Friday.

Reports in Germany indicate that the former Borussia Dortmund striker will join Bayern on loan for 4.5 million euros, with the club retaining the option to purchase him for 20 million euros at the finalization of the loan term. The deal is similar to the one Bayern agreed two years ago with Real Madrid for James Rodriguez, although the club did not execute their option to buy the Colombian in June.

Perisic was reportedly a specific request by coach Niko Kovac, who is aware that the Croatian winger can give his side some of the experience and power they were lacking during several periods last season.

Bayern fans not happy with Perisic signing

However, Bayern fans seem somewhat disappointed with the signing. Many believe that the 30-year-old is not the right profile for a club in the process of renewal after the departures of stalwarts Arjen Robben, Franck Ribéry and Mats Hummels. They also consider Sané a much better player than the Croatian international.

Perisic will likely not be the last signing this summer for Bayern, whose need for further reinforcements was made clear after the defeat to Dortmund in the German Super Cup last Saturday.

Sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic wants to secure the signing of one more winger and is also looking for a versatile central midfielder who can combine well with Thiago Alcântara in the engine room of Kovac’s side.

On the wing, Bayern have their eye on Steven Bergwijn (PSV) and Dani Olmo (Dinamo Kiev), while Marc Roca (Espanyol) is high on the agenda of central midfield options. And of course, Sané will remain also remain on Salihamidzic’s agenda despite his injury setback.
