FC Barcelona apologise after tweet caused offence

The official Twitter account of the Catalan club had posted an image with Junior Firpo that received complaints. But should they have said sorry?

Barcelona ran out comfortable 5-2 winners over Real Betis in the Camp Nou on Sunday but a tweet from their social media team has resulted in them issuing an apology for any offence caused.

Barça apologise for tweet

As well as the headline grabbing youngster Ansu Fati making his debut, so too did Junior Firpo. And it was a photo of the Spaniard that caused the problem.

The image of the player with a his spread hand in the air along with the comment 'Junior knows' referring to the five goals scored was seen as mocking the Sevillian club. It was followed by a later tweet:

"No disrespect was intended, but we were wrong to publish it on a night that was very special for Junior."

Was this a case of one club disrespecting another? Was it just some harmless banter that is seen by many as an integral part of football culture? Loyalties in these matters tend to drive the answer.
