In a repeat of last year’s final, local rivals River Plate and Boca Juniors square off in the semi-final of South America’s continental competition.
Pre-match violence before the second leg of the 2018 final, which saw the Boca Juniors team bus attacked on route to River's Monumental stadium, prompted the match to be cancelled, and the fixture moved to Madrid. River went on to win that game at the Santiago Bernabéu 3-1, which brought the score to 5-3 on aggregate after 2-2 draw in the first leg.
Both sides will hope that such violent scenes will not be repeated as they prepare to meet again at the El Monumental, where the home side will be without Leonardo Ponzio and Juan Fernando Quintero through injury, while Lucas Pratto and Nicolas De La Cruz have been deemed fit enough to be included in the match day squad. The visitors have no serious injury worries ahead of the game, where they will hope veterans Daniele De Rossi and Carlos Tevez will lead the team through a difficult away fixture.
The winner of this two-leg tie will face a final against either Gremio or Flamengo, the two Brazilian rivals that make up the other semi-final of the Copa Libertadores 2019.
