Europa League last-32 draw about to start

UEFA deputy general secretary Giorgi Marchetti is joined on stage by Germany international Josephine Henning and former Sevilla star Frederic Kanouté, a two-time UEFA Cup winner with the Spanish club.

Let the draw commence...

Europa League last-32 dates

The Europa League last-32 first legs will be held on Thursday 20 February, with the second legs on Thursday 27 February. The seeded team in each tie will be at home in the return.

The only exception to these dates involves Braga, who will have to play their second leg at home on Wednesday 26 February due to their city clash with FC Porto.

This year's final is to be played on 27 May in Gdansk, Poland.

How does the draw work?

Each last-32 tie will see a seeded team paired with an unseeded side.

The 16 seeded teams are the 12 section winners in the Europa League group stage, and the four best third-placed teams in the Champions League groups.

As with the Champions League, clubs from same country or who met in the Europa League group phase can't be drawn together.

Who's in the Europa League last-32 draw?

The 32 teams in the hat are:

Seeded teams: Ajax, Arsenal, Basel, Benfica, Braga, Celtic, Espanyol, Gent, Inter, Istanbul Basaksehir, LASK, Malmö, Manchester United, Porto, RB Salzburg, Sevilla

Unseeded teams: APOEL, AZ Alkmaar, Bayer Leverkusen, Cluj, Club Brugge, Copenhagen, Eintracht Frankfurt, Getafe, Ludogorets, Olympiacos, Rangers, Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Sporting CP, Wolfsburg, Wolves

Time for the Europa League draw

Right, it's time to turn our attentions to the draw for the last 32 of the Europa League, which is to get underway in five minutes' time.

Lampard Chelsea

Lampard up against Bayern once again

Another of the narrative-heavy last-16 clashes is Bayern Munich vs Chelsea, which sees Blues manager Frank Lampard lead his side into a tie against the team which, as a player, he helped the Londoners beat in the 2012 final at the Allianz Arena.

Guardiola Ancelotti

Happy Madrid memories of last Pep clash

The last time Real Madrid faced a Pep Guardiola side? April 2014, Champions League semi-final second leg, Bayern Munich 0-4 Real Madrid.

A thumping victory for eventual tournament winners Madrid - one that Bayern's then-boss subsequently described as the "biggest cock-up as a coach".

Guardiola

Real face Pep once again

The last 16's stand-out tie is without doubt Real Madrid vs Manchester City, a heavyeight pairing that will see Los Blancos once again come up against former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola.

The tie is repeat of the teams' 2015/16 Champions League semi-final, won 1-0 on aggregate by Madrid courtesy of Gareth Bale's deflected cross-cum-shot, which officially went down as a Fernando own goal.

Klopp

Liverpool return to Wanda

Liverpool's last-16 match-up with Atlético will see Jürgen Klopp's men return to the Wanda Metropolitano, the stadium where they beat Tottenham to be crowned European champions for the sixth time in June.

Liverpool and Atleti last met in the semi-finals of the 2009/10 Europa League, when Diego Forlán's extra-time goal at Anfield saw Los Rojiblancos oust the Reds on their way to lifting the trophy.

Champions League last-16 draw in full

Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain
Real Madrid vs Manchester City
Atalanta vs Valencia
Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool
Chelsea vs Bayern Munich
Lyon vs Juventus
Tottenham vs RB Leipzig
Napoli vs Barcelona

First legs on 18, 19, 25 and 26 February; second legs on 10, 11, 17 and 18 March.

Group winners at home in the second leg.

And that leaves...

Napoli vs Barcelona

Out seventh is...

Tottenham vs RB Leipzig

The sixth last-16 tie to come out of the hat is:

Lyon vs Juventus

Blues to take on Bayern

Chelsea vs Bayern Munich is out fifth.

Atlético pitted against the holders

The fourth round-of-16 pairing is...

Atlético Madrid vs Liverpool

The third last-16 tie to be drawn is:

Atalanta vs Valencia

They'll both be pretty happy with that draw.

Heavyweight tie out second!

The second last-16 tie is pulled out of the hat... and it's a big one:

Real Madrid vs Manchester City!

First tie out!

And the first last-16 tie drawn out of the hat is...

Borussia Dortmund vs Paris Saint-Germain!

Ah, hold on. Michael Heselschwerdt, UEFA's director of communications, is the man charged with explaining the draw to us.

A reminder that each last-16 tie will pit a group winner against a group runner-up, with teams from the same country kept apart and clubs who met in the groups also avoiding each other.

And also a reminder that the two pots are:

Group winners:

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, RB Leipzig, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Valencia

Group runners-up:

Atalanta, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon, Napoli, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur

Out comes Giorgio Marchetti, AKA the Draw Master

Pinto hands over to UEFA's deputy general secretary, Giorgio Marchetti, a man who is decidedly partial to a spot of exhaustive pre-draw exposition.

He introduces former England women's international Kelly Smith and ex-Real Madrid midfielder Hamit Altintop, who will both be helping with the draw.

Almost draw time in Nyon

Over in Nyon, the draw is about to get going. UEFA's head of communications, Pedro Pinto, says a few words of welcome before we're shown a video that looks back at the group stage and introduces us to the 16 teams who have made it through to the knockout stages. It's a very beat-heavy video.

Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo-Real Madrid reunion?

Here in the Spanish capital, it hasn't gone unnoticed that, with Real Madrid and Juventus in opposing pots, we have the possibility of Cristiano Ronaldo coming up against the club where he scored 450 goals in nine successful seasons.

Both Ronaldo and former Madrid colleague Dani Carvajal are up for a reunion - but both would rather hold off until 30 May...

How and where to watch the Champions League draw

Should you be wondering how you can actually watch the draw in Nyon, by the way, then wonder no more: we have put together a guide answering exactly that question.

Atalanta

Atalanta the story of the Champions League group stage

In what is their first appearance in the Champions League, Atalanta reached the knockout stages after stunning Shakhtar Donetsk in matchday six last week, winning 3-0 in Kharkiv to claim second spot in Group C at the expense of the more seasoned European campaigners from Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Germans Leipzig went one better, booking a maiden last-16 berth by topping Group G ahead of Lyon, Benfica and Zenit.

Two last-16 newcomers amid clean sweep for top five leagues

It's a last-16 line-up which, for the first time in the Champions League, only features clubs from Europe's top five leagues: England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. However, there are two debutants at this stage of the competition, in the shape of RB Leipzig and Atalanta...

Ataturk Olympic Stadium

Champions League: the dates

The last-16 first legs will be played on 18, 19, 25 and 26 February, with the second legs scheduled for 10, 11, 17 and 18 March.

The group winners will be at home in the all-important return leg.

A reminder that the final of the 2019/20 Champions League is to be played at Istanbul's Ataturk Olympic Stadium (not for the first time, apparently) on 30 May.

How does the last-16 draw work?

Each last-16 tie will see a group winner drawn with a group runner-up. Teams from the same country will be kept apart at this stage, and clubs who met in the group phase also cannot be paired with each other.

You'll find an at-a-glance list of who can face who right here.

Who's in the Champions League draw?

The 16 teams in the Champions League hat are:

Group winners:

Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Juventus, RB Leipzig, Liverpool, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Valencia

Group runners-up:

Atalanta, Atlético Madrid, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund, Lyon, Napoli, Real Madrid, Tottenham Hotspur
