Robert Moreno replaces Leonardo Jardim at Monaco
The former Spain coach and long-time Luis Enrique assistant has taken over at the Ligue 1 side with Jardim sacked for the second time in a year.
Monaco have sacked Leonardo Jardim for the second time in 2019 and former Spain manager Robert Moreno has taken over at the Ligue 1 club on a contract running until 2022 for his first stint as a club manager after his acrimonious departure from La Roja in November.
Moreno had replaced Luis Enrique, with whom he worked as assistant with Spain, after the tragic death of the former Barcelona manager’s daughter, but was replaced without warning while under the impression he had a gentleman’s agreement with the Spanish Football Federation to lead La Roja at the 2020 European Championships.
Moreno's first league game as a manager will be PSG
After serving under Enrique at Roma, Celta and Barcelona, the Monaco job represents the first foray into club management for Moreno and the Ligue 1 side confirmed his appointment on Saturday. Moreno will take charge of his first training session on Monday ahead of the Coupe de France match against Reims on 4 January with his first Ligue 1 fixture – and his first test as a top-flight manager – coming against PSG on 12 January.
Monaco are currently seventh in Ligue 1 after 18 games and only three points shy of Lille in fourth but the heirarchy at the club felt that Jardim should be getting more out of a talented squad that includes Adrien Silva, Wissam Ben Yedder, Stevan Jovetic, Gelson Martins, Cesc Fábregas, Keita Baldé, Kamil Glik and Guillermo Maripán. Moreno is expected to take most of his former Spain staff to the Stade Louis II.
