Giovanni Reyna makes his debut in Bundesliga with Dortmund
Reyna made his first appearance with Borussia Dortmund, coming on as substitute in the 72nd minute in victory against FC Augsburg.
Giovanni Reyna, son of former United States professional player Claudio Reyna, became the youngest American, aged 17 years and 66 days, to ever play in the Bundesliga when he came on as a substitute in the 72nd minute in Borussia’s 5-3 win against FC Augsburg.
The youngest American player to play in the Bundesliga previously was Christian Pulisic with Dortmund alos. Without a doubt this was one of the most anticipated events this weekend for American soccer as Reyna debututed in one of the top leagues in Europe.
Giovanni Reyna started the game on the bench once more this season, but BVB’s coach, Lucien Favre, thought could change the game when his team was up 4-3 with little more than 15 minutes left in the game. The German team, once again, decides to trust a young American player after what Pulisic did for them in the past years.
Reyna has been giving great performances with the U19 team so the head coach decided to include him in the first team roster for this game and in today’s debut, when he came on for Thorgan Hazard, he couldn’t do much for them team and he even got a yellow card for a tackle he committed. With no doubt Reyna will have more opportunities with Dortmund’s first team this season to show his quality and showcase his skills to the world.
