Tuesday's Champions League last-16 first-leg tie between Napoli and Barcelona will be the first time these two clubs have met in official competition. They have crossed paths just once - in a pre-season friendly on 25 May 1978 - a game which ended in a 1-1 draw but apart from that, they have managed to avoid each other in European competition, until now.

And the Maradona link, a player who played for both Barça and Napoli, has pushed expectation levels into overdrive - the San Paolo was where he lit up countless afternoons during his seven seasons in southern Italy and his compatriot Leo Messi, will be stepping out onto the hallowed turf for the first time. Messi, who has scored in every LaLiga ground but only in Rome and Milan in Barça's visits to Italy, would love nothing more than to add the San Paolo, Maradona's old stomping ground, to his hit list.

Napoli go into the game after back-to-back wins against Brescia and Lecce. They've lost four Serie A games since the New Year started and sit sixth in the table on 36 points - nine points off the qualifying places for next season's Champions League. Gennaro Gattuso has Elseid Hysaj available again but has left flu-striken Fernando Llorente and Kalidou Koulibaly out of his 21-man squad. Included in the list are a few familiar faces - José Callejón and Fabián Ruiz know Barça from their time in LaLiga. Insigne, Mertens and Milik are also in the list.

As for Barcelona, the weekend's 5-0 win over Eibar was just the tonic they needed after what has been a turbulent couple of weeks. Messi, who had been conspicuosly off the scoresheet in recent games made up for that with a four-goal spree - and is now just 17 goals from equalling Pelé's club goal scoring record. That victory put Barça back at the top of the table in LaLiga after Real Madrid slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Levante.

Long-term casualties Luis Suárez and Ousmane Dembélé miss the game - as will Jordi Alba; but recent signing Martin Braithwaite, who made his debut on Saturday, is in the list. Quique Setién has brought along several B team players for the experience - Iñaki Peña, Riqui Puig, Álex Collado, Ansu Fati, Ronald Araujo and Sergio Akieme.
