Fresh details have emerged about the situation of former Barcelona star Ronaldinho and brother Roberto Assis, who have been in custody in Paraguay for over a week after allegedly trying to enter the country using false passports.

1.5m-euro bond offer not enough, says Paraguayan judge

According to reports in his native Brazil, Ronaldinho’s lawyers have put in an unsuccessful offer of 1.5 million euros as bail bond as they seek to secure the pair’s release into pre-trial house arrest - seen as the only way of getting them out of jail.

The media outlet UOL says the Paraguayan judge Gustavo Amarilla deemed the figure insufficient given the retired footballer’s wealth.

In recent days, Ronaldinho’s legal team had also seen an offer of 800,000 euros rebuffed.

Ronaldinho and brother would be released to small Asunción flat

Should an agreement be reached with the Paraguayan justice system, Ronaldinho and Roberto Assis would be moved into a small apartment in the capital of Asunción.

With Paraguay’s authorities fearful that they would try to leave the country, the flat would be placed under continuous surveillance.
