Javier Aguirre: "As a coach I never stop learning"
The Mexican manager said that after many years of doing what he loves most , he has learned from past mistakes and is enjoying this time in his career.
Javier Aguirre is one of the most successful managers in the history of Mexico and also he is highly respected in Europe. The Mexican has coached teams like Atlético Madrid and Osasuna nd is currently in charge of CD Leganes. During an interview with Versus Digital he said that he is at the best moment of his career because he learned from past mistakes.
As a soccer player Aguirre had multiple managers who he learned different things from each one of them and that also has shaped him to become a better one himself, “with time you just keep learning. I was coached by Raúl Cárdenas, Roca, Alberto Guerra, Memito Vázquez, Mejía Barón and those are just a few names the list is long. I learned something from each one of them and right now I don’t know if I'm better or worse but definitely the most knowledgeable version of myself as a manager.”
“Nowadays I don’t lose my temper like I did in the past when I managed Mexico’s national team with the elimination in the 2002 World Cup against the United States being a perfect example with the loss ultimately causing me to lose my job.”
Currently Aguirre is managing Leganés in La Liga and reflected on things he would’ve done differently in the past, “looking back now, there are so many things I wouldn’t do now that I think about it. I won’t talk about each one of them because there are too many but I mentioned the 2002 World Cup was a bad moment for me.”
At the end of the interview Javier Aguirre talked about a special person for him, Ignacio Trelles, “without a doubt he has been the best manager in the history of Mexico and not only that he was a magnificent human being. The two years he managed me in Atlas I learned so much.”
