Manchester City vs Liverpool: Premier League mini-preview

Manchester City’s return to action was all going according to plan until they travelled to Stamford Bridge a week ago, when a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea confirmed Liverpool as champions. Aside from that Pep Guardiola’s men have looked back to their best in recent weeks, winning their other three fixtures in all competitions without conceding a goal. Liverpool have only played twice in that time and should be the fresher of the two sides having not played in a week. The Reds began with a cagey 0-0 draw against Everton before steamrolling Crystal Palace in one of their most comprehensive performances of the season.

Two of the world’s best come face-to-face

Under Guardiola and Jürgen Klopp these teams have dominated English football in recent seasons and are now two of the mostly highly-respected club sides on the planet. The two managers rarely discuss the rivalry between them but having been narrowly denied last season Klopp will be eager to demonstrate why his side are have gone one better this year. Guardiola’s City still have Champions League aspirations and will want to put down a marker against the reigning European champions ahead of their tie with Real Madrid in August.
