According to the latest figures published by Johns Hopkins University, 13,841,890 cases have been detected worldwide, with 590,845 deaths and 7,746,247 people recovered.

In India, there have been 1,003,832 confirmed cases and 25,602 deaths, with 635,757 people recovered from the virus.

Bharat Biotech starts human trial of Covaxin

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij says Bharat Biotech has started the human trial of Covid-19 vaccine, Covaxin. Bharat Biotech has clearance to tested the vaccine on 375 volunteers in the first phase of clinical trials.
 

Vulnerability to Covid-19

The study in The Lancet looked at several key indicators including housing, hygiene and the health system in the states.

Vulnerability means the risk of consequences of infection, including spread, morbidity, mortality, and social and economic effects of the pandemic.

Bihar, West Bengal and Assam's Kamrup district told to use lockdown "gainfully"

The Centre has told three eastern states that they must use their lockdown periods "gainfully" by implementing a three-pronged strategy to stop the spread of Covid-19, though it said it is not "questioning" the lockdown decision. 

Bihar is in complete lockdown as of yesterday until the end of the month, West Bengal extended its lockdown till Sunday, while Assam's Kamrup district also extended lockdown till Sunday. 

The three steps are: 1. redefining containment zones, provisioning buffer zones, and adding new containment zones; 2. strictly monitoring patients in home isolation through tele-consultation or physical surveillance; 3. augmenting bed capacity in hospitals.

IndiGo offers booking of two seats for a single passenger

Domestic airline IndiGo is offering the choice of booking two seats per single passenger to provide additional distancing on board. "The charges for the extra seat will be effectively up to 25% of the original booking cost. This offer is effective travel starting July 24, 2020," the company explained in a statement.

IndiGo's chief strategy and revenue officer Sanjay Kumar said, "Even though air travel is the safest mode of travel at this point, we understand the customers' emotional need for safety."

Italian national dies in Pondicherry

Three people, including a 92-year-old Italian national, have died of coronavirus in Pondicherry. 25 people have now died of Covid-19 in the city.

Uttrakhand government imposes weekend lockdown

Faced with surging cases of coronavirus, the Uttrakhand government has decided to impose a complete lockdown in the state on weekends. A total of 3,982 people have been infected in the state, with 50 people having died from the disease.
