Keylor Navas pays tribute to retiring Iker Casillas

Keylor Navas was one of the best goalkeepers at the 2014 World Cup and he was key to taking Costa Rica to the quarter-finals of the tournament. That same summer he would arrive at Real Madrid, where he ended up winning a total of 12 titles. In his first year at the club, he shared the locker room with Iker Casillas, who announced his retirement as a footballer on Tuesday.

The Costa Rican arrived during a difficult situation at Madrid. Casillas had been the starting goalkeeper since 1999 and by the coaches' decisions he was slowly getting replaced by Navas.

Even though it was rumored that Navas and Casillas had a rocky relationship, they cleared the air and had a relationship based on respect. Many years have passed and when Casillas announced he was retiring, Navas took to social media to send him a kind message.

It was my pleasure to share the locker room with you… May God be with you in this new phase of your life. Pura vida (pure life)!” wrote Navas in an Instagram story with a picture of both in training.

Casillas announces his retirement

Using his social media account, Casillas posted a picture announcing he was hanging up his gloves with the following message: "Today is one of the most important days of my life and at the same time very difficult in my career: It is time to say goodbye to football."

The goalkeeper retires having won every trophy a footballer can win. His most important piece of silverware was the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which helped Spain to secure by saving Arjen Robben’s shot in the final against Netherlands to keep La Roja in the game.
