Manchester City vs Real Madrid: Champions League preview

A lot has changed since these two sides played out the first leg back in February but after a five month hiatus the Champions League is back to pit two of Europe’s top sides against each other. City hold a 2-1 lead from the fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu but know that they will have to be at their best to progress past a Real Madrid side who won ten consecutive matches on their way to the La Liga title. City’s focus for much of this season has been on the Champions League and they have been in impressive form since the restart, scoring 34 and conceding just four in ten post-lockdown Premier League matches.

Both sides are coached by iconic former midfielders who have become two of the most successful managers of their generation. Pep Guardiola has won the Champions League twice as a manager as well as eight league titles across three different leagues. Zinedine Zidane’s first-team managerial career only spans 210 matches but he has already picked up two La Liga titles and three consecutive Champions League triumphs to become the joint-most successful manager in the history of the European Cup. Zidane has repeatedly hailed Guardiola as the best coach in the world but the City manager is under some pressure to progress in Europe having not passed the quarter-final stage during his time at the club.
