Coronavirus: Atlético Madrid say Correa and Vrsaljko tested positive

The two positive Covid-19 cases for Atlético have been confirmed ahead of the UCL mini-tournament in Lisbon. All other players tested negative.

Update: AS sources investigating this case had found that the two members of Atlético Madrid's travelling party testing positive for Covid-19 were players. The club has since confirmed that those players are Ángel Correa and Sime Vrsaljko. Both players are asymptomatic and will remain isolated at home

There was concern at the club that there could be more coronavirus cases in the squad that is preparing for the Champions League quarter final this week, but the club have said that all other players tested negative.

Atlético Madrid have revealed that two members of their "first team and travelling party" have tested positive for the coronavirus, four days before they are due to begin their involvement in the Champions League final stages in Lisbon.

Atlético due to play in Champions League on Thursday

In a statement, Atlético said the two unnamed individuals have gone into self-isolation.

Los Rojiblancos are scheduled to face RB Leipzig at the Estádio José Alvalade in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Thursday.

Atlético activate positive-test protocol

"Yesterday, Saturday 8 August, all members of the first team and the club's travelling party to Lisbon underwent PCR tests at our Majadahonda training ground, as required by UEFA protocol to be permitted to participate in the quarter-finals of the Champions League," Atlético said.

"Among the results revealed today are two positive tests. The individuals are now self-isolating in their respective homes, and their positive tests were immediately communicated to the Spanish and Portuguese health authorities, UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and Spain’s National Sports Council.

"In addition, the relevant protocol for these cases has been activated, requiring new PCR tests to be carried out on the first team and members of the travelling party to Lisbon, and the close contacts of those who have tested positive.

"This motivates changes to training times and the arrangements for travel to, and accommodation in, the Portuguese capital. The club will coordinate the new schedules with UEFA and as soon as there is a new plan it will be made public."

Champions League 'final eight' to decide 2019/20 winners

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the 2019/20 Champions League are being played as single-leg ties in a mini-tournament held in Lisbon between 12 and 23 August.
