NFL Week 3: selected summary reports
Raiders at Patriots
The New England Patriots placed center David Andrews and rookie linebacker Josh Uche on injured reserve, the team announced Saturday. Andrews, 28, reportedly underwent right thumb surgery on his snapping hand while Uche is nursing a foot injury. Both players will sit out the Patriots' games against the Las Vegas Raiders, Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos before they are eligible to return.
Also on Saturday, the Patriots signed offensive lineman James Ferentz to the 53-man roster from the practice squad. They also elevated defensive lineman Nick Thurman and wide receiver Isaiah Zuber to the 53-man roster from the practice squad.
Andrews, a team captain, started the first two games this season after missing the entire 2019 season due to blood clots in his lungs. He has started 59 of 62 games played since entering the league with New England in 2015.
Uche, 22, was selected by the Patriots in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He was inactive for the season opener against Miami before missing last week's game versus Seattle. Ferentz, 31, has played in 38 NFL games, including two starts last season -- one at guard, one at center -- for New England. He saw action in 21 games with the Denver Broncos in 2015-16 and 17 with the Patriots in 2018-19.
Thurman, 25, made one tackle in his first NFL game last week versus the Seahawks. He was then shuffled back to the practice squad. Zuber, 23, competed collegiately at Kansas State and Mississippi State. The undrafted Zuber will provide depth behind Julian Edelman, N'Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd and Jakobi Meyers.
Chiefs at Ravens
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins was a full participant in practice on Saturday and is listed as questionable to play in the team's showdown against the Baltimore Ravens.
Watkins is dealing with both a concussion and a neck injury after absorbing a hit to the head from Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman during Kansas City's 23-20 overtime victory on Sunday. Perryman was not penalized for the hit.
Watkins, 27, has eight receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown in two games this season for the Chiefs (2-0), who rely on speedy wideout Tyreek Hill, tight end Travis Kelce and others in their potent passing game.
Demarcus Robinson and Mecole Hardman would see additional snaps should Watkins be unable to face the host Ravens (2-0) on Monday.
Watkins has 292 catches for 4,337 yards and 32 touchdowns in 78 career games with the Buffalo Bills (2014-16), Los Angeles Rams (2017) and Chiefs (2018-present). He was selected by the Bills with the fourth overall pick of the 2014 NFL Draft. The Chiefs also listed cornerback Charvarius Ward (hand) and fullback Dorian O'Daniel (knee, ankle) as questionable after both were limited in practice on Saturday.
Defensive end Alex Okafor (hamstring) has been ruled out for Monday night's contest. All other players have received no injury designation, including running back Darrel Williams (ankle), defensive end Frank Clark (illness) and safety Juan Thornhill (knee).
Bears at Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons placed starting cornerback A.J. Terrell on the reserve/Covid-19 list Saturday.
The 2020 first-round draft pick will miss Sunday's home game against the Chicago Bears. He will become the first NFL player to miss a game this season due to the coronavirus.
Terrell's positive test was taken Friday morning and he practiced with the Falcons that day, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
"Now immediate contact tracing goes into effect, per league protocols, but the Falcons have not gotten any other positive test results," Schefter posted on Twitter.
Terrell, who turned 22 on Tuesday, was the 16th overall pick in the draft out of Clemson. He started the first two games for Atlanta (0-2) and registered 11 tackles and one quarterback hit.
It's another blow to a Falcons secondary that is already missing cornerback Kendall Sheffield (foot) and safety Ricardo Allen (elbow), who were both ruled out Friday.
Atlanta elevated cornerbacks Tyler Hall and Delrick Abrams from the practice squad and also promoted linebacker Edmond Robinson as a COVID-19 replacement for Sunday's game with the Bears (2-0).
Packers at Saints
New Orleans Saints star receiver Michael Thomas was ruled out of Sunday's game against the Green Bay Packers due to a high ankle sprain. It will be the second straight game that Thomas will miss.
The 27-year-old Thomas injured the ankle late in the Saints' opening-game win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 13. The club decided against placing Thomas on injured reserve, a move which would have required him to miss three games.
The Saints have missed Thomas, who led the NFL in both receptions (single-season-record 149 catches) and receiving yards (1,725) in 2019. He caught only three passes for 17 yards in Week 1. The three receptions tied his career low for a single game, with the 17 yards his second-lowest single-game mark.
Thomas, a three-time Pro Bowl selection and the league's 2019 offensive player of the year, has racked up 1,000 or more receiving yards in all four prior seasons since being drafted in the second round in 2016 out of Ohio State.
New Orleans also ruled out linebacker Chase Hansen (hip) for the game against Green Bay.
Four players are listed as questionable: Defensive end Marcus Davenport (elbow), defensive end Trey Hendrickson (groin), running back Ty Montgomery (hamstring) and defensive tackle David Onyemata (calf).
