2020 Guardianes: León too strong for Club América
Competition favourites León hosted Club América at Victoria stadium and won the game 3-2 in a thriller with three games of the regular tournament to play.
León showed why they are the best team of the 2020 Guardianes tournament and with three games left of the regular season they remain at the top after defeating Club América 3-2 on Monday night. The team from Guanajuato has 33 out of 42 possible points and are looking the top contenders to win the tournament.
Club América needed three points and from kick-off started pressing high. It was Henry Martín who would test Rodolfo Cota in the first five minutes of the game, but León managed the pressure well and in the 23rd minute Fernando Navarro scored the first goal of the game. Great definition from the Mexican defender.
América answer back
The visiting team kept their aggressive style of playing and in the 37th minute. Sebastián Córdova headed in the equaliser. The game was exciting and both teams' offenses were looking sharp.
Just before half-time, Club América’s high pressure paid off - they stole the ball from León and Henry Martín scored the second goal of the game to give the visiting team the lead. Their celebrations didn’t last long because minutes later, Nicolas Benedetti had to be helped off the pitch after suffering a serious-looking injury.
During stoppage time, Jean Meneses equalised just before the first time ended. When both teams returned, Luis Montes received the ball inside the box to score the third goal for León in the 52nd minute.
Club América tried to get back into the game but León’s defence was impenetrable. León took the game 3-2 and have three games left to play. The home team remains at the top of the table, while Club América drops to fifth with 25 points.
