Smooth transition: Japanese mask maker dumps Trump, embraces Biden
For a mask producer in Japan, the transition from President Donald Trump to Joe Biden has been a smooth one, as it switches production to masks of the Democrat president-elect.
Ogawa Studios, a small producer in Saitama, north of Tokyo, starting making rubber Biden masks earlier this year but since his election win last week, it has ramped up production.
In October alone, 1,000 Biden masks were sold for 2,400 yen ($22.81) each, and the company has set a goal of producing a further 25,000 by year's end.
Meanwhile, the Trump masks, which cost the same, have been relegated to the bottom of the company's product line.
Ogawa Studio manager Koki Takahashi said it was much easier to produce a caricature of Trump, whose mask appears to be shouting, than it was for Biden.
Biden's caricature is much more low-key, with a gentle smile.

The forum, an annual meeting of heads of state and government with civil society organisations and charitable foundations, said the funds would come from those participating in the ACT-Accelerator initiative, an program designed to ensure global access to covid-19 tests, therapeutics and vaccines.
ACT-Accelerator has been launched and supported by the World Health Organisation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the Wellcome Trust, the European Union, France, Germany and other states and organisations.
Republican Georgia secretary of state says no sign of widespread fraud in vote count
Georgia's Republican Secretary of State said on Wednesday there was no sign yet of widespread fraud in his state's vote count, where Democratic President-elect Joe Biden currently has a 14,000 vote lead over President Donald Trump.
Brad Raffensperger, in an interview with CNN, said he has ordered a hand recount because of the closeness of the vote count, but he believed votes had so far been tallied accurately.
Biden's current lead, with nearly all votes counted, is 0.3%. Asked about voter fraud, Raffensperger said: "We have ongoing investigations but we have not seen something widespread." He added there was no evidence yet of any discrepancies large enough that could reverse Biden's lead.
Raffensperger said he also believed a hand recount, which he wants completed by Nov. 20, will not overturn the machine count that is near completion. "We believe the ballots were counted accurately," he said.
Biden reassures U.S. allies in calls with leaders of Japan, S.Korea, Australia
In their first calls with Joe Biden since the US election, the leaders of Japan, South Korea and Australia on Thursday reaffirmed plans to form close ties with the president-elect to tackle issues including climate change and regional security.
The three key Asian allies - Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison - join other global leaders in recognizing the Democratic challenger's Nov. 3 victory over incumbent Donald Trump, who has so far refused to concede.
Biden's projected win comes against a backdrop of China's growing military and economic assertiveness in the region, and after years of sometimes tumultuous relations between Asian allies and the United States under Trump over issues including trade, defence and the environment.

One in five covid-19 patients develop mental illness within 90 days
Many covid-19 survivors are likely to be at greater risk of developing mental illness, psychiatrists said on Monday, after a largeUS-based study found 20% of those infected with the coronavirus are diagnosed with a psychiatric disorder within 90 days, report Reuters.
Anxiety, depression and insomnia were most common among recovered coronavirus patients in the study who developed mental health problems. The researchers from Britain’s Oxford University also found significantly higher risks of dementia, a brain impairment condition.
“People have been worried that covid-19 survivors will be at greater risk of mental health problems, and our findings ... show this to be likely,” said Paul Harrison, a professor of psychiatry at Oxford.
Doctors and scientists around the world urgently need to investigate the causes and identify new treatments for mental illness after covid-19, Harrison said.
The study, published in The Lancet Psychiatry journal, analysed electronic health records of 69 million people in the United States, including more than 62,000 cases of covid-19. The findings are likely to be the same for those afflicted by the coronavirus worldwide, the researchers said.
Trump asks supporters to fund failing election lawsuits
In a completely unsurprising yet equally shocking turn of events, Donald Trump's re-election campaign is pleading with supporters to help clear debts run up by dozens of failed and failing lawsuits.
Those donating may believe that the money will be used towards challenging the election result, but may have missed that their contributions are earmarked for paying off Trump’s re-election debts, report The Guardian.
“President Trump needs YOU to step up to make sure we have the resources to protect the integrity of the election!” the wording on both funds says, which is featured in a huge pop-up on Trump’s re-election webpage. It continues: “Please contribute ANY AMOUNT IMMEDIATELY to the Official Election Defense Fund and to increase your impact by 1,000%!”
But if you scroll down, past the information about the “Left-wing MOB” trying to “undermine our election”, you’ll see some fine print. On Trump’s personal fund, it dictates that of all donations raised, only 50% will go towards a recount effort, and that “50% of each contribution, up to a maximum of $2,800 ($5,000), [will] be designated toward DJTFP’s 2020 general election account for general election debt retirement until such debt is retired”.
This is just the latest in a string of frankly cringe-worthy moves from the president, as he continues to refuse to resist overwhelming pressure to accept the result of the election, called in favour of Joe Biden by all major news agencies, on Sunday.

Top evangelist Trump supporter admits Biden win
Dallas pastor Robert Jeffress who's one of Donald Trump’s top evangelical allies, has acknowledged Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential race 2020.
“It appears that former Vice President Joe Biden will become the 46th president of the United States on Jan. 20,” Jeffress wrote in an op-ed for Fox News.
The well-known pastor, who has frequently praised Trump, described Biden’s victory as a “bitter pill to swallow” for many Christians in the country, but he encouraged everyone to pray for the president-elect’s success.
“When Joe Biden becomes president, we should commend him for the things he does right. We should condemn the things he does wrong. And above all, we must pray fervently for our president,” Jeffress said.
“If President Biden succeeds, we all succeed. May God bless Joe Biden, and may God bless the United States of America.”
The op-ed will likely bother Donald Trump, who has continued to push baseless claims of election fraud in the days since Biden was declared the winner of the presidential race.
NYT front page: Election Officials Nationwide Find No Fraud
The New York Times has contacted election officials in every state in America and were met with zero allegation of electoral fraud. They say:
"Election officials in dozens of states from both parties told The New York Times that there was no evidence of voting fraud, amounting to a forceful rebuke of President Trump’s false narrative."
The Trump campaign's legal battle look likely to continue as their 'Election Defense Fund' draws in money for them to cover their substantial litigation, along with paying off the President's campaign debts. The news comes after lawsuits filed in Wisconsin and Philadelphia were dismissed by the court, citing a lack of evidence.
New polls show the extent of mistrust fostered this election
This election has been marred by unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud by the losing candidate. Donald Trump has filed a number of lawsuits after last week's election, even though at a Pennsylvania hearing yesterday a Republican lawyer admitted that he did not have any evidence of voter fraud.
But the President's accusations have caused widespread distrust in the democratic process and an enormous proportion of his support appears to have doubts about the outcome. A staggering 86% of Trump voters believe that Joe Biden did not legitimately win the election, while nearly three-quarters claim that we will never know the true result for definite.
Full recount confirmed in Georgia
One of the tightest races of this election has been in Georgia, where Biden looks close to flipping another Republican state. Joe Biden still holds a narrow lead there (around 14,000 votes) but his margin has shrunk in recent days and it looks likely to fall within the 0.25% automatical recount threshold.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has today announced a full by-hand recount to be completed by 20 November, the deadline for certification.
This was one of the states that the Trump team have focused their attention on since Election Day, quickly revealing their intention to call for a recount. On the night of the election Trump falsely claimed victory in Georgia and recently tweeted: "Georgia will be a big presidential win, as it was the night of the Election!"
Republican lawyer contradicts Trump's Pennsylvania fraud claim
A Pennsylvania court was told by the Republican lawyer bringing the Trump campaign's lawsuit that he does not know of any examples of electoral fraud. The Pennsylvania case is one of many initiated by the President as he looks to overturn the result of last week's election.
President Trump’s campaign had been seeking to prohibit Pennsylvania’s secretary of state and seven countiesfrom certifying the state’s results of the 2020 election, essentially blocking them giving the Electoral College votes to Joe Biden.

It had been a few days since a state was called before North Carolina was confirmed Republican yesterday, but the latest victory could have been called a few weeks ago. President Donald Trump has retained the three Electoral College votes of Alaska, the 14th consecutive Republican victory in that state.
As well as the support of the northern-most state's residents, Trump also has the backing of Republican Gov. Mike Dunleavy who is standing by the President's claims of voter fraud. Dunleavy said:
“I, for one, will support our president’s efforts to ensure that the election is completed with integrity. Let us hope and pray that it is.”
Harris gives Veterans Day tribute to US servicemen and women

AP report that the incumbent has blocked President Elect Joe Biden from receiving intelligence briefings until he deems the election is settled. In recent days a number of top Defence officials have left the Pentagon, with some replaced by Trump loyalists.
The President's public schedule has not included an intelligence briefing since 1 October, nearly six weeks ago. He has also not met with his coronavirus task force in months as the number of daily cases has spiralled to record levels in recent days.
When asked about Trump's refusal to give him access to the Presidential Daily Briefing, as is the norm for an incoming President, Biden seemed unfazed in a press conference yesterday: "Obviously the PDB would be useful, but it's not necessary. I'm not the sitting president now."

The fight against coronavirus was front and central for much of the election campaign and after recording seven consecutive days of over 100,000 new cases extra measures are being introduced in parts of the US. Wisconsin residents are encouraged to stay at home and avoid any unnecessary travel.
Although Pfizer's vaccine announcement was cause for joy Joe Biden has been keen to make clear that the fight against the virus is far from over. Even once the vaccine is cleared for use it will take time for it to be rolled out nation-wide and to get into the hands of people who need it.
Biden has emphasised the importance of mask wearing and physical distancing in his public appearances since being named President Elect, and this will continue to top his agenda in the coming months. Some have suggested that Biden's strong stance on covid-19 may have made the difference for him in key swing states like Wisconson.

There has been wholesale change in the Defence Department as the White House looks to clear house to prepare for the upcoming legal battles over the result of the presidential eleciton. A report from CNN suggests that President Trump is looking to get rid of those who are unlikely to support his court challenges, which has lead to four top officials either being fired or resigning in just a day.
Trump announced on Twitter that he was "terminating" Secretary of Defense Mark Esper earlier this week. Esper's replacement, director of the National Counterterrorism Center Christopher Miller, is a known Trump loyalist.
"This is scary, it's very unsettling," one defense official told CNN. "These are dictator moves."

Biden leads the popular vote by over five million
As vote counts continue to be updated the President Elect's margin of victory keeps ticking up and he has just passed a significant milestone. Joe Biden's lead over Donald Trump in the popular vote has now surpassed five million, giving him a 3.3 percentage point adavantage.
This is the 59th presidential election in American history and a winning margin of five million has only been reached 15 times. However for context, 2020 has had highest turnout of any American election for 50 years.

However Jill Biden may be going about things slightly differently and has said previously that she intends to continue her day job while in the White House.

"I hope so. I would love to. If we get to the White House, I'm gonna continue to teach," she said, when asked by CBS News if she will continue to teach if her husband is elected. "It's important, and I want people to value teachers and know their contributions, and lift up the profession."
Six key states show Biden's insurmountable lead
Many in the Trump campaign have attempted to make draw parallels to the disputed 2000 race, when Al Gore was initially called as the victor before a recount in Florida swung the election in George W Bush's favour.
But although Donald Trump's team prepare for a series of legal battles and recounts, the latest vote count (shown by the Washington Post's Holly Figueroa O'Reilly) show how far removed that idea is from the reality. Joe Biden's lead in the Electoral College is so large that he would need a number of key states to be overturned for him to have any chance, and he is too far behind for that to be possible.
Georgia is the only one of these states still uncalled, and with another 16 Electoral College votes on offer Biden's winning margin looks likely to grow in the coming days.

Dollar steadies as vaccine optimism wanes
The US dollar stabilised as optimism about a potential coronavirus vaccine was offset by worries about how the drug will be delivered and by a surge of new infections in the United States.
"With the global daily infections from the coronavirus accelerating yesterday, it seems that concerns over the pandemic's economic impact may have limited further gains in equities and other risk-linked assets," said Charalambos Pissouros, senior market analyst at JFD Group.

Mexico's ambassador to the United States on Tuesday called Joe Biden the 'prospective' President-elect, in what could indicate a slight shift in position after the Mexican government said it was too soon to recognize a winner of the U.S. election.
Ambassador Martha Barcena published a series of talking points on Twitter titled "Position of the Government of Mexico" containing the new language. It was not immediately clear if the choice of words signalled a shift in Mexico's official stance.

Russia says its Sputnik V covid-19 vaccine is 92% effective
Russia's Sputnik V vaccine is 92% effective at protecting people from covid-19 according to interim trial results, the country's sovereign wealth fund said on Wednesday, as Moscow rushes to keep pace with Western drugmakers in the race for a shot.
The initial results are only the second to be published from a late-stage human trial in the global effort to produce vaccines that could halt a pandemic that has killed more than 1.2 million people and ravaged the world economy.
Russia registered its covid-19 vaccine for public use in August, the first country to do so, though the approval came before the start of the large-scale trial in September.
"We are showing, based on the data, that we have a very effective vaccine," said RDIF head Kirill Dmitriev, adding that it was the sort of news that the vaccine's developers would talk about one day with their grandchildren.
Asian leaders to sign China-backed trade deal amid US election uncertainty
Southeast Asian leaders start meetings on Thursday that are expected to lead to an ambitious China-backed trade deal at a time the still uncertain election result in the United States leaves questions over its engagement in the region.
Leaders of the 10-member Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN), China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand are scheduled to conclude talks on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) this Sunday.
The deal, which is expected to be signed later on Sunday on the sidelines of a mostly online, four-day ASEAN summit in Hanoi, will take years to complete but will progressively lower tariffs across many areas and could become the world's biggest trade agreement.
