Borussia Dortmund lost 3-1 against Bayern Munich on Saturday at the Westfalenstadion for matchday 7 of the Bundesliga. The United States men’s national team midfielder Giovanni Reyna started in ‘Der Klassiker’ and became the third American to play in the Bundesliga's biggest game.
This was the seventh appearance for Reyna in the Bundesliga, scoring one goal and giving four assists. For the match against the current champions, the American couldn’t make a difference and Dortmund’s coach Lucien Favre subbed him in the 69th minute.
Three Americans have played in the famous fixture
Prior to Giovanni Reyna, fellow Americans Christian Pulisic and Jovan Kirovski also faced Bayern Munich wearing Dortmund's jersey. Pulisic faced Munich on five occasions and he scored twice. On the other hand, Kirovski was present in ‘Der Klassiker’ on one occasion and he has been the only American to win the UEFA Champions League.
Now Giovanni Reyna will join the United States men’s national team to make his debut in the November international break. The 17-year-old could make his first appearance on 12 November against Wales and four days later the USMNT will face Panama.
