One of LaLiga's top fixtures is taking place on Saturday in Madrid, as Atlético host Catalan giants Barcelona, a match that has historically featured lots of goals, but that was before the Simeone era. That change has brought defensive intensity and a more physical game under the Argentinian coach.

Atlético Madrid vs Barcelona: preview

Good proof of Simeone’s defensive mindset is the fact that Los Colchoneros, sitting third in the league, are undefeated in seven matches and have only conceded two goals. They are three points behind leaders Real Sociedad having played two matches fewer.

Barcelona have played the same number of matches, but they are eighth in the standings, with 11 points, after a poor start to the season in the domestic competition (three wins, two draws and two losses).

Atlético to topple big two

With both Spanish powerhouses Barcelona and Real Madrid struggling this season in LaLiga, Atlético could take advantage of the situation and establish themselves as favourites to lift the title, even more so than what predictions had suggested before the start of the season. If you are in the US you can tune in on Fanatiz.

Simeone’s men, with a four-game winning run in the competition, haven’t been beaten for more than a year in LaLiga. Last time they were defeated was in September 2019 against Real Sociedad (2-0).

Suárez out against Barcelona

Atlético suffered a huge blow by losing former Barcelona striker Luis Suárez, diagnosed with covid-19. The coronavirus also affected Lucas Torreira and he will also be sidelined.

Héctor Herrera, Stefan Savic, Mario Hermoso and Sime Vrsaljko will also be unavailable for the match due to fitness issues, although veteran striker Diego Costa could play against the Catalan side if he fully recovers from a hamstring problem.

'The old guard' to counter Barcelona's power

Simeone will put his trust in his core players: Saúl Ñíguez and Koke will almost certainly play from the start, as well as the Portuguese in-form striker João Félix, who will partner with Ángel Correa up front. They will probably be supported by Marcos Llorente and Yannick Carrasco in the attacking line.

As for the visitors, they lost key midfield player Sergio Busquets with a knee problem that he picked up on international duty for Spain. Frenkie de Jong is expected to play together with Miralem Pjanic in that area of the field.

Just as Atlético can’t call upon Suárez, Barcelona won’t have Ansu Fati, but the difference is that the youngster, one of the best Barcelona players this season, will be out for several months. Meanwhile injured defender Ronald Araújo is also out for the match, but Ronald Koeman could see Philippe Coutinho play again, after the Brazilian player has recovered from his hamstring injury.

What Messi will fans see?

Without a doubt, lots of football fans will be watching Lionel Messi’s performance. The Argentinian star, who recently said that he is tired of “always being the problem at Barcelona”, will be the main concern for the hosts, and he will likely be joined up front by Ousmane Dembélé, Antoine Griezmann and Pedri.
