Stores opening hours in Thanksgiving 2020: Walmart, Target, Costco...
Holiday season shopping is a tradition for many but this year many big-name stores will be closed. Here's our breakdown of where will and won't be open on 26 November.
In recent years Thanksgiving shopping has become increasingly popular as customers look to get ahead of the curve and pick up some early Black Friday deals. However this year that will not be possible as the majority of stores will remain shut as part of their covid-19 precautions.
Back in July, Walmart became the first major retailer to announce that they will not be opening their stores on Thanksgiving, for the first time since the late 1980s. In a memo to employees, Walmart CEO John Furner wrote:
"We know holiday shopping will be different this year, and we will be managing sales events differently.”
Which stores will be open on Thanksgiving?
However there are some stores that will be open on 26 November, provided that they do not contravene local coronavirus restrictions. The likes of Whole Foods, Dollar General, 7-11, Walgreens and Kroger will be open as usual this year in most states.
The exceptions will be in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island where local restrictions prevent stores opening on Thanksgiving this year. Other states have introduced their own rules, like in Pennsylvania where a ban on alcohol sales on Thanksgiving eve is hoped to reduce covid-19 transmissions. Some stores are imposing their own restrictions on opening hours this holiday season so it is worth checking before you head out. Walmart, for example, is only open from 7:00am to 8:30pm currently.
