Manchester United 1-3 PSG: Champions League: results, summary and goals

Man Utd 1-3 PSG: on the whistle report

Brazilian Neymar scored twice and his compatriot Fred was sent off as Paris St Germain beat 10-man Manchester United 3-1 at Old Trafford on Wednesday to throw Champions League Group H wide open.

United, PSG and RB Leipzig all on nine points heading into next week's final round of games in which the English side go to the German club and the French champions host Istanbul Basaksehir.

Neymar fired PSG into a sixth-minute lead after a Kylian Mbappé shot was deflected and fell kindly to the former Barcelona forward who drilled the ball into the bottom corner. United drew level in the 32nd minute through a Marcus Rashford shot which deflected off the outstretched leg of Danilo to beat PSG keeper Keylor Navas.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side created several good chances after the break with Edinson Cavani hitting the bar but PSG grabbed the win when Marquinhos poked home in the 69th minute after a drive into the box had been diverted to him by Abdou Diallo.

United's difficulties intensified when, a minute later, midfielder Fred was sent off for a second yellow card and Neymar added the third in stoppage time after a counter-attack. (Reporting by Simon Evans)

Group H: how it stands

As you can see, with one game to go, this group is far from decided.

There are various permutations but if we assume that PSG beat İstanbul Başakşehir in Paris, then Leipzig need to win at home to United to go through to the Last 16.

A draw is enough for United.

FULL-TIME

Rashford 31' | Neymar 5', 90+1, Marquinhos 68'

90+5

Peep, peep, peeeeep!!

There is goes, PSG have all three points and this group is far from over.

90+3

Everyone on the pitch has accepted that this contest has ended and we're just awaiting the whistle.

Brilliant breakaway goal from the French side, Rafinha being played in behind the United defence and then cleverly, and selfishly, cutting the ball back to Neymar who taps home calmly. Game over.

90+1

GOAL!! Neymar confirms the win for PSG

90

Four minutes added

90

Di Maria was ready to come on but the injury sees him return to his seat and Gueye replaces Diallo.

Ighalo comes on for Wan-Bissaka in a last change for United.

89

CLOSE!! Mbappé so so close to ending the game.

The French star sprints from well inside his own half leaving red shirts in his wake. His final decision as he reaches the shooting area is to slide it into the far corner rather than pass to the spare Neymar. The ball rolls just wide.

87

Diallo is injured here and it looks as though Tuchel is going to have to change his planned substitution.

85

Mbappé looks to have created a great chance for himself as he bursts into the United area, before stepping on the ball and falling over. Chance gone.

84

United trying to force something out of this despite the man disadvantage. Maguire is up helping the attack and gets a ball into the middle where Fernandes meets it with his head.

On target but not enough behind it to trouble Keylor.

80

BOOM!! What a hit from Paul Pogba!

The ball drops to the Frenchman on the edge of the PSG penalty area and his first time volley is as sweet as could be. Navas had no chance, even if there were three of him, but it screams just over the bar.

What technique.

79

United changes: Cavani and Martial OFF, Greenwood and Van de Beek ON

PSG changes: Verratti and Florenzi OFF, Rafinha and Kehrer ON

78

United try to make something happen but they are easily dispossessed.

From that Neymar draws the the attention of at least four defenders as he tries to make space for a strike. Instead he lays it off to Herrera whose effort flies over the bar as De Gea watches on.

75

Understandably, the control of this game has moved completely to the visitors.

73

Pogba comes on for Rashford

72

I think it was Di Maria who complained about the weather in Manchester and with what's just happened the dark clouds are gathering above for United.

Rashford is injured and is limping off.

70

RED CARD! I'll give you two guesses who's been sent off!

Fred was always walking a tight rope after what happened in the first half, but Solskjaer kept the faith. A poor challenge and it's his second yellow.

Uphill struggle now for the hosts.

Following a corner - after that previous save - there is confusion in the United area and as the ball falls loose the Brazilian taps it past the Spanish stopper.

69

GOAL!! Marquinhos pokes home a second for PSG

68

SAVE! He's only been on for a minute but his strike forces De Gea into a brilliant save. PSG definitely started to look much more of a threat.

65

Double change for PSG:

Bakker on for Kean and Herrera on for Paredes

64

CLOSE! Great play from the Ligue 1 side eventually sees Marquinhos drop off to meet a deep cross at the back post. He does well to head it back over De Gea but it hits the crossbar and bounces over.

63

PSG are slowly getting some more joy in this but Rashford again causes problems for the visitors' defence. Again on score but it feels like only a matter of time.

Marquinhos needs attention after that knock but he's going to be fine to continue it seems.

59

It's a yellow for Verratti who gives a naughty trip to Martial in the middle of the park. It may have been inspired by an elbow to the face of Marquinhos a second before.

57

CLOSE!! What an effort from Cavani.

The striker is set free but doesn't fancy the sprint into the area and so dinks a delicious chip over Navas from about 25 yards out. It has the Costa Rican beaten but clangs back out off the bar.

Fernandes meets the rebound and deftly lays off the ball to Martial who slowly lines up and hits hard and low. Navas is there to block away with a very good save.

56

Possession is back with the French champions who appear to be taking a moment to try and remember how to play. They then lose it and United break.

53

It's an impressive start from the hosts here. Fred finds a little space and looks to test Navas from distance. A deflection takes it away for a corner, just as it looked as though it may cause the keeper another problem.

The corner comes to nothing.

52

Another opportunity almost falls United's way, this time to Cavani, but the Uruguayan just can't reach it.

49

MISS!! It's a glorious chance for Martial to give United the lead. Lovely play from the right opens up the space for Rashford who rolls the ball into the path of his French teammate who skies it into the Stratford End.

Ole cannot hide his displeasure.

47

CHANCE! United break up play in the middle of the park well and get it into Rashford in the PSG area. Just as he's about to pull the trigger the defender's foot gets in front of him.

Nice open start to this second half.

46

United get us going but it doesn't take long for PSG to get their feet on the ball.

Immediately Neymar takes it for a run down the left, but too red shirts close him down and stop his advances. That looked like the Brazilian was teasing McTominay in for a challenge.

We're off again!

As the teams come out we get an answer to our question. Fred is still on.

No changes.

As the teams get ready to come out, remember that a draw secures qualification for United but does not end PSG's journey. They would need the English side to avoid defeat in Germany though, so a win tonight is advisable.

Rash

The strike!

By the way, in case you are wondering, we're still giving the United equaliser to Marcus Rashford but are expecting it to be marked down as a Danilo OG.

Awaiting official confirmation.

Fred

A few seconds after Fred's head met that of Paredes. Neymar wasn't impressed.

It's a question that must be being mulled over in the home dressing room. Let's see who comes out in the second half.

First half review

The players go in at the break with the score level. Solskjaer will be delighted with that, but should be getting stuck into his players while they munch their oranges.

Tuchel has to be happy with the performance from his troops, but clearly disappointed not to be ahead by at least one.

The big talking point from the first half was the non-red card for United's Fred.

HALF-TIME

Rashford 31' | Neymar 5'

45+1

The whistle blows.

45

We'll have one minute of added time.

44

A half chance from a deep Rashford cross is followed by another niggle involving Neymar.

McTominay stops the Brazilian from breaking down the left with a tidy sliding tackle. But as the Scot got up, he stepped backwards onto the ankle of the floored forward.

On purpose? The two players have opposing views on that! Ref lets it go.

37

Paredes picks up a yellow after a perceived foul on Fred. The United man could have easily seen a second booking for a late foot on his rival.

Will Solskjaer remove the Brazilian risk at half-time?

34

PSG immediately onto the front foot again and win a corner.

From that Mbappé collect in the inside left channel and drops a shoulder or two to create space for himself. With that he dinks a curling attempt towards the far post but it goes just wide.

Wan-Bissaka managed to collect the previous loose ball and cut it back to the English striker. He stepped inside and tried his luck from a similar position as before. A double deflection leaves Keylor stranded and it rolls into the near post.

33

GOAL!! Rashford has the equaliser after a wicked deflection

32

SAVE! Better play this time from the home side and Martial drifts in from the left before letting rip. Keylor does well to dive to his left and push it away.

Wan-Bissaka is there to keep the attack alive...

29

Another opportunity for United to find a man in the area from a deep free-kick. Very poor this time, overhit and out of play.

26

Corner to United. What can Fernandes do with this?

It's another good delivery from the Portugal man, outswinging to the middle of the six-yard box, and it's met by McTominay. His header is down but is a simple stop for Keylar in goal.

The consensus appears to be that United got away with that.

22

It's only a yellow for the Brazilian. He can count himself rather fortunate.

19

Trouble here. Fernandes goes down holding his face after being brushed to the side. The protests then end up with Fred appearing to 'stick the head' on Paredes who flies to the floor.

It happened behind the ref so he's off to the monitor to review. This could well be a red for Fred...

17

United have done really well to escape conceding another goal after the last minute or so of action.

Mbappé broke from his own half and had support on either side. He chose Neymar to his left, who played it back, and then it was shifted to Kean on the right.

A couple of half chances were blocked out by the returning defenders before the Brazilian attempts a bicycle kick from just inside the box. It's sneaking in at the back post but doesn't have the power to beat De Gea.

16

A short spell of control from the hosts ends at the feet of Rashford who tries to catch out Navas with a left-foot curler on the edge of the area. The effort has no real power and the former Madrid keeper smothers it easily.

14

It's PSG again looking the more dangerous. Florenzi whips in a delightful cross from wide on the right and the goalscorer Neymar is all alone coming in round the back.

He just can't reach the ball despite throwing his legs at it.

I wonder what he has to do to remind the United defenders that they should mark him.

13

A ball in from the left ends up at the feet of Cavani but he can't bring it under control quick enough as it bounces up. Cleared away as United try to get some sort of a foothold in this game.

10

Free kick given away by Bruno Fernandes and that hands PSG the possession back.

From it they fashion another chance, Florenzi taking a pot-shot from distance and forces De Gea into a spectacular one-handed save.

A good point from Jonathan re Verratti who has been involved plenty thus far.

It's the perfect start from Tuchel's side and the expected two dangermen combine. Mbappé breaks in from the right with purpose and tries his luck from the edge of the United area.

The ball deflects off a defender and is picked up by the Brazilian who thwacks it home from a tight angle. De Gea couldn't react quick enough.

6

GOAL!! Neymar puts PSG in front early

5

The corner is delivered into a crowd of players but is headed away safely.

United are quick to make use of the ball and Rashford is set scampering free down the middle. He's normally so dangerous in this position but brilliant covering easing the youngster off the ball.

4

Nice exchanges between Verratti and Diallo but again they struggle to make inroads. The follow up work from the Italian wins the away side the first corner of the game.

2

Neymar tries to pick out Kean but a red shirt is quick to intercept. Neymar looks to have taken a knock

1

PSG get us going and work the ball quickly back to their defenders to get a few early touches in.

Once they push forward to the half-way line they are met with a sturdy challenge from Fred and a free-kick is handed to the visitors.

We're off!

United in their familiar red shirts while PSG are in their splendid white shirt with the vertical stripe up the front. It's almost time...

Right, the teams are out of the pitch here and lining up for the cameras...

MORE. OF. THIS. PLEASE.

Leipzig find their wings

Back to the other game in the group and the Germans have won it at the death.

A dynamic Group H

As we get closer to kick-off here at Old Trafford, the other two sides in this group are inching towards full-time. And it's a cracker.

Istanbul Basaksehir have equalised in the final ten minutes to make it 3-3 against RB Leipzig. I'll keep you posted or you can follow our Opta feed here.

EC

Tuchel on Cavani

As well as speaking about his own players, the PSG boss was also asked for his thoughts on his former striker, who is going to be wearing red tonight.

"Always ready to do everything for the team. A big physical impact, scoring comes naturally to him and he's reliable 24/7 – you can call him in the night and he will be there – to score, to defend, to score, to defend.

"I'm happy for him personally that he could show this to all Manchester United fans in the last game against Southampton – he was absolutely decisive for them.

"He does not need to show us tomorrow, we already know, so he can do a little pause, it's not necessary to show us. If he will play, we will need to find answers for that."

Read the full interview.

Fallen Ángel

Going back to the point that Tuchel disagrees with the Eurythmics that There Must Be An Angel in the starting XI, the German coach has said: “Tonight is not a decision against Ángel but one for Moise”

The attacking threat is clear

With the aforementioned Neymar and Mbappé starting, United will be very aware of the defensive challenges facing them, as this video demonstrates.

One tactic that Solskjaer could focus on is preventing the service into the star forwards.

Team reflection: PSG

Headline acts Neymar and Mbappé start tonight and they will be supported by Moise Kean, who's been given the nod over former United star/flop Ángel di Maria, who is on the bench.

Leandro Paredes, Marco Verratti and Danilo Pereira will aim to boss the middle of the park, and then look for the extremely talented players ahead of them.

Tuchel will likely go for this from the off.

Home sweet home

The Red Devils arrived at the famous Theatre of Dreams earlier...

Team reflection: United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have been caught in two minds over his starting line-up tonight.

Knowing a draw is enough, he'll want to contain the attacking threat of PSG first and foremost, potentially setting up to hit on the break, despite being the home side.

With a solid base of Fred and McTominay in front of a pacey-enough backline, this looks to be his plan.

And with the speed of Martial and Rashford supporting the ever-dangerous Edinson Cavani - a player with a point to prove - the threat is obvious.

PSG XI: Keylor Navas; Florenzi, Marquinhos, Kimpembe, Diallo; Paredes, Danilo Pereira, Verratti; Mbappé, Kean, Neymar

Subs: Rico, Letellier, Dagba, Bakker, Kurzawa, Kehrer, Pembele, Herrera, Gueye, Rafinha, Fadiga, Di María

Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Alex Telles; Fred, McTominay; Rashford, Bruno Fernandes, Martial; Cavani

Subs: Henderson, Bailly, Fosu-Mensah, Williams, James, Lingard, Mata, Matic, Pogba, van de Beek, Greenwood, Ighalo

Team news is on the way...

PSG: win required

The Parisians need a victory at Old Trafford if they want to avoid what would be seen in France as a massive embarrassment, by missing out on making it out of the group.

The assumption is that Leipzig will beat Basaksehir - although clearly not much can be taken for granted in this group - and that would remove any route to qualification for Thomas Tuchel's side.

United sit top...for the moment

As you can see, United are level on nine points with Leipzig and know that a win or a draw tonight will secure their passage to the next round.
