Edinson Cavani has apologised for a social media post that could be deemed offensive, though Manchester United insist there was no "malicious intent" on the Uruguayan's part.

The striker landed himself in hot water for a post to his Instagram – which was soon deleted – that saw him use a Spanish phrase that could be deemed racially insensitive as he thanked a friend for paying tribute to him.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday's UEFA Champions League clash vs PSG, United boss Solskjaer stated: “We’ve communicated with Edinson and he’s really deeply sorry for the mistake he’s made. There was no malicious intent at all – it was just an affectionate greeting to a friend of his – but we explained the situation to him.
