León and Pumas will face each other in the final for the first time
The 2020 Guardianes tournament is coming to an end and the two best seeded teams will play in a two leg final for the first time in the history of Mexican football.
The final of the 2020 Guardianes tournament is ready and Pumas UNAM will face Club León for the first time in the history of Mexican football. The team from Guanajuato finished in first place with 40 points and Pumas UNAM in second with 32.
103 tournaments had to be played for these teams to meet in the final. León dominated the series against Chivas to advance to the final. On the other hand, Pumas did the unthinkable to advance, because in the first leg they lost 4-0 against Cruz Azul and on Sunday at home they won by the same score. Since Pumas was the higher seed they were the ones who advanced to the final with the aggregate of 4-4.
Both teams have 7 Liga MX titles, so whoever wins this year will tie Cruz Azul that has 8 and hasn’t won it since 1997. So it is an important step in the history of Mexican first division for both teams to lift this years’ title.
Coaches head-to-head
Ignacio Ambriz and Club León return to the final after losing against Tigres UANL in the 2019 Clausura tournament. On the other hand, Andrés Lillini was Pumas’ interim coach at the beginning of the tournament, but since the results were positive, the bosses decided to keep him in charge.
Final is set
Club Léon has six years without lifting the title and they will have a fresh opportunity in this tournament. Pumas also is eager to lift the title, because the last time they won it was in the 2015 Apertura tournament. The first leg of the 2020 Guardianes tournament final will be played on 10 December at the Olímpico Universitario stadium and the second leg on 13 December at the Nou Camp. Both games will be played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic.
