Real Madrid vs Borussia Monchengladbach: live online: Champions League 2020/21

The moment of truth has arrived for Real Madrid and Borussia Mönchengladbach. Both teams will fight to get a ticket to the knockout stages, with an eye on the Inter Milan v Shakhtar Donetsk clash.

Group B is the tightest one in the current Champions League edition and one of the most exciting and surprising the European tournament has ever had. Gladbach, Shakhtar, Real Madrid and Inter all have a chance of going through in the sixth and last group-stage match.

Real Madrid want to avoid Europa League

Real Madrid, third with seven points, will try to avoid the Europa League, a tournament they haven’t played since 1994, by defeating the German squad, who top the group with eight points. If Los Blancos win, they will qualify in first position. They could also go through with a draw if Inter defeat Shakhtar in Milan.

Gladbach will go through with a draw

As for Gladbach, they just need a draw against the current LaLiga champions to be among the 16 best teams in Europe, as, in that case, only Shakhtar could overtake them in the final standings if the Ukrainian side beat the Nerazurri. But the options for Gladbach go on: Marco Rose’s men could also go through even if they suffer a defeat to Real Madrid, if the Inter-Shakhtar clash ends in a draw.

It's all or nothing for Zidane

All eyes will be on Real’s performance and... on Zinedine Zidane. The French coach knows he will probably be sacked by the club if the team don’t go through. However, Zizou has always managed to reverse the situation in the most difficult situations: Madrid were against the ropes after being beaten by Cádiz and Shakhtar and they reacted and defeated Barcelona at Camp Nou, and grabbed a victory in Milan against Inter in the Champions League without Sergio Ramos and Karim Benzema, when many analysts were giving the edge to the Italian side.

Ramos and Carvajal a Real boost

But now Zidane will be able to call upon Ramos and Benzema, with the Spanish captain taking the centre-back spot in place of Nacho. The other good news for the hosts is that Dani Carvajal is ready to come back into action and will play with Ramos in defence.

However, Eden Hazard will be unavailable for this crucial match, together with Luka Jović, who suffered a groin injury. Martin Odegaard is doubtful, while Marco Asensio could feature from the start up front.

Jantschke and Bensebaini out

As for Mönchengladbach, who lost to Inter Milan at home in gameweek five, they won't have Tony Jantschke available for the match, while Nico Elvedi is doubtful, so Christoph Kramer could be forced to fill in in defence.

Ramy Bensebaini won’t play either, as he tested positive for coronavirus, while Jonas Hofmann will also be unavailable through injury. Marcus Thuram, though, will come back into the team after being named on the bench in the draw against Freiburg.
