MLS 2020 top scorers: who's got more goals overall?

Diego Rossi scooped the Golden Boot in November but the 2020 season's overall top scorer title is still up for grabs heading into the MLS cup final between Columbus Crew and Seattle Sounders.

The MLS season will officially close this Saturday night with the MLS cup final between Columbus Crew and the Seattle Sounders at the Columbus Crew Stadium in Ohio.

Among the guaranteed starters for Columbus Crew will be star forward Gyasi Zardes, one of the runners up in the battle for the Golden Boot 2020, which was won by LAFC striker Diego Rossi. At 22, Rossi has become the youngest Golden Boot winner in MLS history.

Rossi scooped the award at the end of the regular season after netting 14 goals in 19 appearance for the LA franchise. This was the second year in a row the award was claimed by an LAFC player after Carlos Vela’s record-breaking 34-goal campaign in 2019.

Rossi was followed by Columbus Crew SC's Gyasi Zardes, Chicago Fire FC's Robert Beric and the Seattle Sounders' Raul Ruidiaz, all with 12 goals each.

MLS 2020: Zardes, Ruidaz and Rossi level on overall goals

While Rossi has claimed the Golden Boot, MLS Cup finalists Zardes and Ruidiaz still have a chance to claim the title of 2020’s overall top goal scorer. Following their 12 goals during the regular season, both Zardes and Raul Ruidiaz have since added two goals each to their respective tallies on route to the MLS cup final to put them level on overall goals with Rossi, with all three players on 14 goals each.

Both Zardes and Ruidiaz are set to line out in the MLS cup final this Saturday and if either can score one goal (or one goal more than the other), they will become the MLS 2020’s outright overall top scorer for 2020.

Of course, if they score one – or the same number of goals – each, they will jointly hold the title. But as things stands, the overall top scorer 2020 is a three-way tie between Golden Boot winner Rossi, Zardes and Ruidiaz.
