Real Madrid 2-0 Atlético Madrid: Match report

Reuters - Real Madrid showed why they are La Liga champions with a convincing 2-0 win at home to leaders Atletico Madrid in the derby on Saturday to end the visitors' unbeaten start to the league season.

Real Madrid made a blistering start and deservedly took the lead in the 15th minute when Casemiro headed home from a corner, leaving Atletico behind for the first time in their 11th league game of the season.

Dani Carvajal put Zinedine Zidane's Real side further at ease with a stunning strike in the 63rd minute which came off the post and into the net off keeper Jan Oblak for an own goal.

Atletico were utterly outplayed by the champions and did not have any attempts on goal in the first half, while they failed to manage a shot on target until the 80th minute when Saul Niguez's header was saved by Thibaut Courtois. Reporting by Richard Martin

Madrid goal

Real Madrid players celebrate their second goal in tonight's Madrid derby. The win over their neighbours Atleti sees them move to within three points of the top of the league.

Atlético's first defeat since February in LaLiga

Real Madrid broke Atleti's 26-game unbeaten run in the league tonight with their 2-0 victory at the Alfredo Di Stéfano.

Koke post-match:

The league season is long and we’re still top, we’ll go again. They have played better than us tonight especially in the first half and they are small margins that make the difference but we continue and go again.

We almost drew the game. We’re not thinking about who is going to win the league, but just looking forward to the Copa del Rey coming up this week.

Dani Carvajal post-match:

It has been a very difficult week for us. We played tonight against a tough Atlético side. We'll keep going - there are lots of games. We're doing well, its hard to know how the season will play out. It's not your typical season with injuries etc. We were well on top tonight, pressed high, they had two chances. We're still in a very early stage of the season, but it was important to win tonight and we have Athletic Club during the week. I had a new baby this week and there was no better way to celebrate the birth than the way I did!

Just under a minute to go. Real Madrid definitely deserve to win tonight's Madrid derby.

Saúl's diving header is saved by Courtois to keep Madrid ahead by two.

Superb save from Courtois!

Real Madrid changes:

OFF Carvajal & Vinicius

ON Asensio & Rodrygo

Atlético have failed to produce many chances tonight.

Shot from Saúl! Goes well wide of the mark, but Atleti won't give up just yet.

Madrid looking to slow things down now and keep hold of the ball, with 15 to go. Recycling the ball from left to right.

That's another nasty one! This time it's Savic's studs on Benzema. Free to Madrid.

OFF Suárez

Atleti ready to make their fifth change of the night. Kondogbia coming in.

A golazo it was!

Some excellent intricate passing by Madrid, involving the in-form Lucas Vázquez, who has been a revelation this season.

Madrid working with a very compact two lines of four now as Atleti look to get a goal before it's all too late.

Carvajal became a father earlier this week so he celebrates by sucking his thumb!

ON Saúl

The game is very even at the minute with just over a half an hour to play in the Spanish capital.

Saúl is about to enter the fray for Atleti

Lemar scored his first goal in 45 games last week against Valladolid and really should have really scored again. Still 1-0 to Madrid.

Big, big chance for Atleti to equalise!

How does he miss from there?

Corner Atleti!

Of the three Atleti subs made at half-time, two have been booked within the opening five minutes of the second half.

10 minutes to go before the break! Atleti now looking more comfortable. Still 1-0 to Madrid.

This time it's Casemiro on João Félix. The Brazilian takes out Félix and picks up a yellow card.

João Félix kicks out at Casemiro, is nowhere near the ball but Mateu Lahoz waves it on, surprisingly.

Atleti now in a 4-4-2 formation, a system that isn't used like it once was but is working for Simeone's side this season.

Madrid are really up for this one! It's absolutely vital they don't lose tonight as that would send Atleti nine points clear of Los Blancos.

Half an hour played at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano and it remains 1-0 to Real Madrid.

Nice combination play from Atleti but João Félix just overplays his pass.

Karim Benzema is not a No 9, nor a No 10, so some are saying he's a No 9.5

Toni Kroos is doing his stuff again, with another passing exhibition.

Zinedine Zidane has an excellent head-to-head record against Simeone in La Liga, with Atletico’s last win against the neighbours coming back in February 2016.

Kieran Trippier is definitely benefitting from the change of system this season, which is also helped by having Marcos Llorente now settled into a midfield role on the right.

Atleti sitting quite deep at the minute. The majority of the play in their half. Madrid won't let them out.

It's actually an outstanding save from Oblak to knock it onto the post.

Benzema drives a left-footed shot from the edge of the box. Oblak gets a touch and it comes out off the post. Best chance of the game.

Benzema smacks the upright!

Atleti defending tonight in a 5-3-2 / 5-4-1. Carrasco and Trippier acting as wing-backs.

Only twice in their entire club history have Atlético made such a fast start to a season. 26 points from 30.

Zidane vs Simeone

What a midfield battle that would be!

Modric cracks an effort wide from 30 yards. Jan Oblak had it well covered. The game is beginning to open up.
