Cruz Azul receives Liga MX support over match-fixing accusations

Liga MX released a statement in which they came out to support the players and coaching staff after the accusations against them for a possible match-fixing.

Cruz Azul receives Liga MX support over match-fixing accusations

Cruz Azul beat Pumas UNAM 4-0 at home in the first leg of the semi-finals of the 2020 Guardianes tournament and lost by the same score in the second leg. The ‘Machine’ was eliminated from the tournament even though the aggregate was 4-4, but Pumas was the higher seeded team so they advanced to the final.

Possible match-fixing?

According to information from ESPN, some of the players received a phone call with threats if they didn’t lose the series against Pumas after winning 4-0 in the first leg of the semi-final. So on 13 December the Liga MX released a statement in which they came out to support the players and coaching staff after the accusations against them for a possible match-fixing.

“Cruz Azul players and coaching staff have the full support of the league against this serious accusations,” read the statement,

In the same statement, the Liga MX said that they believe in the integrity of all the players and coaches that participate in the league and they will never do such a thing. “We believe that everyone is a professional and do their job inside and outside the pitch.

Some of Cruz Azul players also spoke about the subject to make clear that there was no match-fixing in the series against Pumas and they even apologized to the fans for the elimination. Now the ‘Machine’ will travel to Florida to face LAFC for the Concacaf Champions League.
