Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema scored his second of the match, and Real Madrid's third, to kill off any lingering hopes Athletic Club had of taking something from the game.
Benzema grabs a double against Athletic
Benzema had put Real Madrid back into the lead, making it 2-1, when he headed home a Carvajal cross after 74 minutes, and it was the Frenchman again on the scoresheet in time added on. Real Madrid broke quickly after a vital save from Courtois and Benzema ended up running onto Modric's pass and firing home to make it 3-1.
Real Madrid had gone ahead just before half-time from a fine striker from Kroos, before Capa had equalised through Capa just after the restart.
Real Madrid's three points take them onto 26 points and level with leaders Atleti and Real Sociedad. Atleti play tomorrow away to Eibar, while Real Sociedad visit eighth placed Barcelona.
