Modric, fans' choice for FIFA's 'The Best' award

Real Madrid's Luka Modric took the award home in 2018.

Lewandowski confident

When asked by the Polish outlet Sportowe Fakty who should have won the Ballon d’Or had this year’s award not been cancelled by France Football, owing to the covid-19 pandemic, Bayern's Lewandowski replied, “Me. We won everything we could win with Bayern. In every competition, Bundesliga, German Cup, Champions League...I was the top scorer. I think a player who achieves this would win the Ballon d’Or.”

Ballon d'Or 2020 cancelled

The Ballon d'Or was cancelled for 2020, but FIFA considers it important to honour "achievements in this extraordinary year".

FIFA confirmed earlier this year that its The Best awards will go ahead as a virtual event despite France Football's Ballon d'Or being cancelled in 2020.

With football across the globe impacted by the coronavirus pandemic, and France's Ligue 1 season notably curtailed in 2019-20, the call was made earlier in July that no Ballon d'Or would be awarded.

The decision frustrated Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, the apparent favourite to succeed record-breaking six-time winner Lionel Messi.

Robert Lewandowski's 2019/20 season:

2020 will go down as the year when Lewandowski not only reasserted his claim to be the best No 9 in the world but also as the game’s most influential performer.

His consistency over the previous eight seasons has been incredible. He notched 30 goals in all competitions in 2011-12, followed by 36, 28, 25, 42, 43, 41 and 40 in every season since.

Last season the Polish striker took it to the next level, scoring 55 goals in 47 appearances for Bayern as they claimed their sixth European Cup alongside a domestic league and cup double.
