Barcelona, third in LaLiga, go into the match in one of their best moments of the season, after showing no mercy against Granada (0-4) and displaying some consistent football with a seemingly rejuvenated Leo Messi.
In contrast, their opponents Real Sociedad have lost their winning flow in recent weeks and from being the leaders of the domestic competition they have dropped to the 5th position in the standings.
Real Sociedad's momentum is gone
Imanol Alguacil's team will try to return to winning ways by surprising Barcelona, but the stats don’t help: the Basque outfit have just won one of their last 12 matches in all competitions (LaLiga and Europa League), beating Athletic Club 0-1.
This is only the second time that the Spanish Super Cup has involved four teams and the Txuri urdin won the inaugural edition of the tournament in 1982, defeating Real Madrid 4-1 on aggregate over a two-legged final.
Silva, doubtful; Elustondo, out
For the match against Barcelona, David Silva is working to overcome a muscular problem and could be unavailable, while Aritz Elustondo won't play. Nacho Monreal seems to be fit and ready after returning to full training. Aihen Muñoz is suspended.
Asier Illarramendi and Robin Le Normand could feature from the start, while it’s unclear whether Alexander Isak will be chosen over Willian José.
Messi and Griezmann hit top form
As for Barcelona, Clement Lenglet could partner with Ronald Araujo in defence, as Gerard Piqué and Sergi Roberto are still injured.
Koeman won’t be able to call upon the services of Philippe Coutinho and Ansu Fati, but the majority of the side that beat Granada last weekend are available.
Messi (16 goals, nine assists), the LaLiga ‘pichichi’, will be the biggest menace for Real Sociedad and he is expected to be supported by an in-form Antoine Griezmann up front together with Ousmane Dembélé.
